Week Three Discussion of The Flight of Gemma Hardy Parts Four and Five

I can't believe the read is over. So let's talk about it.

Week Three
Parts Four and Five

Wow this week’s parts were almost like a whole other novel. We learn more about Gemma and she learns more about Gemma too. Not only who she is but where she came from.
So let’s get started

Why do you think Gemma ran away?

Who are the character stand outs in this part?

In a response from Margot in week two’s post she tells us about her class discussion of Gemma and the difference between childhood perceptions of right and wrong vs the adult perception. I think this part of the novel really demonstrates that difference and Margot did a splendid job of illustrating that.
What action(s) of Gemma most validated this to you as a reader.

Final thoughts

Now let’s do one of my most favorite things; advance the story five years.
What’s happening with Gemma, Hugh, Nell and the rest.

  1. I love Debbie's question what are the characters doing five years from now. I think Gemma got her degree, maybe spent a year in Iceland. Perhaps she's working in politics or the fishing industry or protecting birds or planting trees or making recordings of the traditional folk stories and songs.

As for Hugh Sinclair, I hope he's gone on to do something which he feels more passionate about than banking but perhaps he's become one of those very creative bankers....

And Nell and Robin are both growing up and doing well at school.

And Vicky has opened her own business selling oatcakes and Orcadian chairs.

    1. Margot, wow thanks for answering.
No kids for Hugh and Gemma?
I see them having kids and Hugh being a househusband while Gemma pursues her education

I see Nell spending more time with Seamus so they can keep Alison's memory alive

      I like what Vicky's doing :)

Oh and of course Gemma and Hugh are undescribably happy too

  3. Congratulations, April! Best wishes with your new addition!

Margot, I apologize, I was overwhelmed with work and simply couldn't catch up to the group. That said, I have not given up, and have entered into the third part of the book. I absolutely love this story, and am sorry that I couldn't participate in the discussion. Even though Gemma's life is about as far from mine as it could be, somehow her story resonates with something deep inside. Maybe it's just the desire - the need - to be understood, something I feel that Gemma is always striving for. Thank you, Margot, for this lovely story!
