Synopsis:

In the past. . .home to the tragically destroyed Great Exhibition, a solitary thirteen-year-old boy meets his next-door neighbor, a recently widowed young teacher hoping to make a new start in the tight-knit South London community. Drawn together by loneliness, the unlikely pair forms a deep connection that ends in a shattering act of betrayal.

In the present. . .On a cold January morning in London, Detective Inspector Gemma James is back on the job while her husband, Detective Superintendent Duncan Kincaid, is at home caring for their three-year-old foster daughter. Assigned to lead a Murder Investigation Team in South London, she's assisted by her trusted colleague, newly promoted Detective Sergeant Melody Talbot. Their first case: a crime scene at a seedy hotel in Crystal Palace. The victim: a well-respected barrister, found naked, trussed, and apparently strangled. Is it an unsavory accident or murder? In either case, he was not alone, and Gemma's team must find his companion—a search that takes them into unexpected corners and forces them to contemplate unsettling truths about the weaknesses and passions that lead to murder. Ultimately, they will question everything they think they know about their world and those they trust most.

My Interview with Deborah Crombie

Deborah Hi Welcome to The Reading Frenzys stop on your blog tour celebrating the paperback edition release of The Sound Of Broken Glass.
Tell my readers just a bit about the novel.
DEBS: So glad to be here! The Sound of Broken Glass opens with Gemma (Detective Inspector Gemma James) and her colleague and friend Detective Sergeant Melody Talbot at their new job in South London. They’re called to investigate a murder in a seedy hotel in an area called Crystal Palace. A local barrister is found naked, bound, and strangled.
Duncan (that’s Detective Superintendent Duncan Kincaid, Gemma’s spouse) is at home on family leave, taking care of the couple’s three-year-old foster daughter, Charlotte.
Gemma’s case seems complicated enough, and then she learns there is a connection with someone she and Duncan know, a young guitarist named Andy Monahan.  The crime in present hinges around something that happened to Andy when he was thirteen, growing up in Crystal Palace.

Deb I have to tell you Im a HUGE fan of Duncan and Gemma and have been with you from the very first novel all the way through to this your 15th in the series.
From a readers standpoint I love how the series has progressed both personally and professionally for Gemma and Duncan.
Are you surprised by the series longevity?
DEBS: I knew from the beginning that I wanted to write a series, but I never anticipated that I would be still be writing Duncan and Gemma stories fifteen books later!  And while I knew I wanted the series characters to change and grow, I didn’t foresee just how that would come about. I didn’t even intend a romantic relationship when I wrote the first book, but Duncan and Gemma had other ideas. Just how they’ve gone from colleagues to friends to lovers to married partners to parents of a blended family has been such fun to write. And there are plenty more stories to tell.

How many countries does Duncan and Gemma publish in?
DEBS: Let’s see (counting on fingers…) I think around fifteen. Some countries like France, Germany, and Czeckoslovakia have published every book in the series. Others are running a bit behind, or have only bought certain books.  The books are just now taking off in Spain, which is a big thrill for me, as Spanish is the only other language I read even marginally.

I love the Czeck editions of the books—they have these sort of graphic pulp-crime-novel covers that they’ve carried all the way through the series.  Wonderful.

Was it always planned a series from the first novel or did you realize you werent finished with Gemma and Duncan after the first The End?
DEBS: I always wanted to write a series. By the time I finished the first book, I had started the second and had the third outlined.

Whats the hardest part keeping a long running series fresh?
DEBS: I think that has been easier for me because I write multiple viewpoint, multiple setting, and in some cases, multiple timeline novels. So I always get to introduce new characters and settings, and learn new things. And because Duncan and Gemma’s lives and relationships have progressed, I always want to see what happens next.
Is there an end in sight?
DEBS: I certainly hope not!  My problem is usually trying to get too many stories into one book. There are always more to tell. And more challenges for Duncan and Gemma, and for the characters who are no longer really secondary, Melody and Doug.

Your series is set in the UK, mainly in London.
Do you travel abroad to do your novel research?
DEBS: I always try to make a least two research trips for a book, and sometimes more. I’ll be going to London this May, researching what will be book #17. Can’t wait!

Deb you have the 16th Duncan and Gemma novel coming in November of this year.
Give us just a peek at the story line please.
DEBS: TO DWELL IN DARKNESS, Kincaid/James #16, comes out September 23rd! It’s very hard to avoid spoilers, but I will say that Duncan is no longer at home on family leave. While Gemma and Melody investigate the murder of a young girl in Brixton, Duncan’s case involves a group of protesters and fiery death in St. Pancras International Railway Station. And then it gets complicated!

So Deb if the writing bug hadnt bitten you what do you think youd be doing?
DEBS: Probably something really boring!  Writing is the thing I’m best at.

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer these questions and letting my readers and me find out a bit more about you and the wonderful series. I cant wait to read the upcoming novel.
DEBS: Thanks for having me!

  5. Oh I love series that revolve around a married couple like this. And how neat that the progression of their relationship wasn't expected and happened on it's own. I always get a little tickled when authors say that. That characters just decided on their own. Always makes me smile :) Thanks for the intro to these Debbie!
