Bye, Bye Love
by KJ Larsen
on Tour June 2015
Chicago’s Pants On Fire Detective Agency targets liars and cheats. But PI Cat DeLuca is once again up to her smokin’ skinny jeans in murder.
Cat is out running in a neighborhood park when she crashes over the faceless body of Bernie Love. Bernie was the finance guy to the scary Provenza family, with whom he grew up. And friend to Cat’s shady, Ferrari-wheeling-cop Uncle Joey. As she hauls out her phone, Cat is assaulted by someone with a Rolex, stun gun, and wheelbarrow. When the cops show up, the killer is gone. And so is the body.
Captain Bob, a stickler for habeas corpus, blows off Cat’s story. Stung by a chorus of snickers from the Ninth Precinct, home base for DeLuca men, Cat vows to make her case and goes after Rolex man. The murderer, desperate to silence the only person who can place him at the park, comes after Cat. She’s quickly on a collision course with the deadliest adversary she’s ever encountered—but she has the help of her beagle partner, her gun-happy assistant, an ex-spy (or two), and her outrageous, interfering Italian family. Meanwhile, her hot, FBI-boyfriend seems sidelined in Vegas.
In Bye, Bye, Love, K.J. Larsen delivers another nail-biting tale rife with unexpected plot twists, zany characters, fabulous food, and laugh-out-loud humor.

Hi Ladies, welcome to The Reading
Tell us all a little about Bye, Bye, Love.
Cat DeLuca’s brief marriage to Johnnie
Rizzo was a crash course in infidelity. But it gave her the skills she needed
to launch The Pants On Fire Detective Agency. Now armed with spy glasses, a
camera, and Dr. Pepper Lip Smacker, the street smart detective scales balconies
and teeters outside hotel windows to catch philanderers with their pants down.
Her 8X10 glossies can sweeten a client’s divorce settlement.
In Cat’s fourth adventure, the Chicago PI
is running in the park with her beagle/partner, Inga, when she crashes headlong
over a faceless body. Before she can haul out her phone, the killer returns and
overpowers her. When the cops arrive, the body’s gone and there’s no evidence
to back up Cat’s story. Captain Bob blows her off and dismisses her claim as a
prank. Determined to find justice for the victim and prove the Captain an
idiot, Cat goes rogue. She’s hot on the trail of a body snatcher with a
beagle-size bite on his leg. Aided by
her gun-happy assistant, Cat stalks a mobster, haunts a biker bar, and adopts a
dead man’s dog while dodging bullets from a killer who wants the witness dead.
What a fabulous collaborative
team, three sisters.
Tell my readers how this came to be?
With too much wine and a decided lack of
We sisters were close as kids but as
grownups, we found ourselves living in different parts of the country,
connecting less and less. In the summer of 2008, we scheduled a sister
get-a-way on the San Juan Islands. One night there was a bottle of wine, a
bucket of clams, and a lot of laughing and joking. We passed around the books
we brought with us (we’re crazy-avid readers) and someone said we should write
a novel together and have lots of getaway time together. We weren’t serious but
we made a game of it. We whipped out some paper and began taking notes. When
morning came, we had the Pants On Fire Detective Agency, a sassy PI named Cat
DeLuca, an outrageous, interfering Italian family, a hunky FBI agent, a couple
questionable ex-spies, and a crooked cop with a red Ferrari named Uncle Joey.
The Pants on Fire Detective
Agency sounds like a place I’d love to work.
Who thought of it?
usually blame it on Chateau Ste Michelle Winery and a good Chardonnay.

Who thought of it?
The truth is, our Mama passed shortly before this time. We like to think it was her idea.
Now tell us a little about Cat
Cat is the second of five kids in an Italian, South Chicago family
where the men are cops and the women breed more cops. Cat doesn't buy into that role. She’s 30, divorced, and her
detective agency catches cheaters. She gets into all kinds of sticky
situations. Capers, sexy hunks, and
explosions rock the Bridgeport neighborhood on her watch.
Cat is fiercely loyal to her hilariously
dysfunctional family. Her partner, a beagle named Inga, is a food whore and
she’s likely to eat the evidence. Her assistant, former client, Cleo Jones, has
a disturbing eagerness to shoot people.
Now tell us how the collaboration
works especially since you’re not all in one spot.
Every morning we sisters get
on Skype. Since we live in different parts of the country it’s the best
way to communicate. We’ll have a loose outline for the plot but we like
lots of room to improvise. Each day we ask, What does Cat do today. We throw
around ideas and make some decisions and then whoever wants to write that
section, will dibbs it. Scenes have been settled with rock, paper, scissors.
Usually it’s a pajama party. Three
blurry-eyed sisters white-knuckling their first cup of coffee like a
lifeline. It ain’t pretty.

The most hotheaded?
What’s the most fun about working
with your sisters?
The most fun is the laughter. Cat DeLuca
and her hijinx gang crack us up.
The writing life can be challenging at
times but we sisters have each other’s backs. The gift of creating something we
love with the people we love most, is priceless.
Ladies thanks so much for this
fabulous chat. Good Luck with Cats latest tale and all her investigations to
