Looking for a Christmas Book…and a Chance to Win One!

As I’m sure is true of many of you, I learned to read at an early age.  And oh, how I loved it!  Books to me were—and are—the very best place to go to experience all that life has to offer.  In a book, I could get all the thrills and chills and challenges of fighting monsters, living through the French Revolution, surviving World War II, falling in love for all time...anything.  All of life’s variety and wonder were and are right there, between the pages of my favorite books.  And I could go there instantly from the comfort of my favorite chair.

I have a younger sister. Early on I drew her into my love of the written word.  Starting when I was five and she was two, I would read to her.  With lots of vocal and facial expression.  I expected a great deal of her, as my audience.  And she always rose to the occasion, sitting there rapt as I swept us both away to worlds we would never know in real life.  I was a taxing big sister.  Now and then I would stop out of nowhere and demand of her, “What did I just read?”  Inevitably, she would repeat my last sentence back to me verbatim, brown eyes wide with wonder at the thrill of the tale.

When I was about seven and she, four, we started reading A Christmas Carol every year.  Ten pages a day starting the first of December.  Our grandmother had given me a lovely copy of the Dickens treat, illustrated so beautifully by an artist called Maraja—and yes, I still have that book.  This is it right here. (Deb, Christmas Carol right here)  Oh, how we looked forward, my sister and I, to our yearly adventure with Scrooge and Marley and the three wise spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet-to-Come.  We would cry together in joy, every year, when Tiny Tim crowed “God bless us, Every One!”

Later, as I grew to adulthood, a book was always the best, most exciting and uplifting place to go to get away from all my everyday troubles.  That’s still true, to this day.  If I couldn’t read…well, I just don’t know what.

And I love to give and receive books for Christmas.  In fact, that’s my question today.  I always need a heads up about a great book I ought to read—or give as a gift.  Christmas-themed books are perfect.  But don’t stop there.

Is there a book you love and cherish and want everyone to read?  I need to know about that book.  And in the spirit of the season with the help of the Reading Frenzy, I’m offering one of my own Bravo family Christmas stories, A Bravo Christmas Wedding, as a giveaway.  Just scroll down to enter.

Good luck, Merry Christmas Happy Hannukah—and God bless us, every one!

    1. Bartra, we always cut down our own tree when I was growing up. And I had live trees until about ten years ago. Then I bought a fake one I love and I've never looked back!

  4. That's a great story! I tried reading Dickens, really can't get into it. But maybe 10 pages a day is doable.

    2. Talk Supe, thanks! Good memories! Re Dickens, I do know what you mean. A Christmas Carol is actually pretty short. So that helps... XOXO!

  5. I prefer a real tree, but we've had an artificial one for a few years. It's easier.

As for books, I try to read a lot of Christmas stories each year. A few I especially loved were:
    Montana Miracle by Debra Salonen.
Three Nights Before Christmas by Kat Latham.
A Christmas Homecoming by Melissa McClone.

  6. Aw that's a great tradition :) We didn't have a read like that growing up but I do love Christmas romances. My favorite is a Virgin River Christmas by Robyn Carr. It gave me all the feels. Whew. I give my mom childrens books for Christmas. Some holiday related and others just pretty ones :) She's collected them for years.

    2. Anna! Thank you, and love that you give your mom childrens' Christmas books. I was tempted to post several of the illustrations from my copy of A Christmas Carol. They are so beautiful. And I'll get the Robyn Carr. She is amazing. XOXO!

  7. What a great story. I am a convert...the whole fake tree thing works well for us! And you have to admit, they look a lot better than when my grandmother had one when I was a kid! And a yearly favorite read, called A Cup of Christmas Tea, always reminds me of my grandmother too! Thanks!

    1. holdenj I know that story I hear it every year on Christmas day as I travel to my sister's house on our local talk radio station. Thank for sharing, it's a fake tree for me too and I remember when my Grandma got a silver tree with a rotating color wheel. What a hoot that was!

  9. What a lovely tradition to share with your sister, Christine❤️. As for favorite books-I'll just mention two of the many: A Bollywood Affair. It's a story that has it all. It's a romance, though categorized as mainstream/ women's fiction. I fell hard for that book. As for a Christmas story- Sleigh Bells in the Snow by Sarah Morgan. ❤️❤️❤️ If the Resort in the story was real, I'd Make a reservation today! Great trilogy.
Debbie honey, artificial tree, though I wish every year I could get a real one. 😁
