Charlotte Holmes, Lady Sherlock, is back solving new cases in the USA Today bestselling series set in Victorian England.

Inspector Treadles, Charlotte Holmes’s friend and collaborator, has been found locked in a room with two dead men, both of whom worked with his wife at the great manufacturing enterprise she has recently inherited.

Rumors fly. Had Inspector Treadles killed the men because they had opposed his wife’s initiatives at every turn? Had he killed in a fit of jealous rage, because he suspected Mrs. Treadles of harboring deeper feelings for one of the men? To make matters worse, he refuses to speak on his own behalf, despite the overwhelming evidence against him.

Charlotte finds herself in a case strewn with lies and secrets. But which lies are to cover up small sins, and which secrets would flay open a past better left forgotten? Not to mention, how can she concentrate on these murders, when Lord Ingram, her oldest friend and sometime lover, at last dangles before her the one thing she has always wanted?

Overview:

"The Widow of Rose House is close to perfection and any lover of historical romance will adore this debut." - Smart Bitches Trashy Books

It’s 1875, and Alva Webster is ready for a fresh start. After three years of being pilloried in the presses for fleeing her abusive husband, his sudden death allows her to return to New York where she is determined to restore a dilapidated Hyde Park mansion, and hopefully her reputation at the same time. She is decidedly not supposed to fall in love.

But when a haunting at her new home threatens her careful plans, she must seek help from the eccentric and brilliant and - much to her dismay - very handsome Professor Samuel Moore. Alva doesn’t need more complications in her life, especially not a convention-flouting, scandal-raising one like Sam. Unfortunately, Sam is the only one who can help. Together, the two delve into the tragic secrets wreathing Alva’s new home while Sam attempts to unlock Alva’s history—and her heart.

Set during the Gilded Age in New York City, The Widow of Rose House is a gorgeously romantic debut by Diana Biller, with an intrepid and resilient American heroine guaranteed to delight readers as she starts over and finds true love.

"A chemistry-fueled debut with a bit of a ghost story, great for readers of gothic romance." - Booklist

"Biller mirrors Wharton's genius for revealing the emotional gold lying beneath the Gilded Age, which motivates the novel's massive romantic turmoil." - Bookpage (Most Anticipated Romances)

Overview:

This hilarious, colorful portrait of a sex worker navigating life in modern Morocco introduces a promising new literary voice.

Thirty-four-year-old prostitute Jmiaa reflects on the bustling world around her with a brutal honesty, but also a quick wit that cuts through the drudgery. Like many of the women in her working-class Casablanca neighborhood, Jmiaa struggles to earn enough money to support herself and her family—often including the deadbeat husband who walked out on her and their young daughter. While she doesn’t despair about her profession like her roommate, Halima, who reads the Quran between clients, she still has to maintain a delicate balance between her reality and the “respectable” one she paints for her own more conservative mother.

This daily grind is interrupted by the arrival of an aspiring young director, Chadlia, whom Jmiaa takes to calling “Horse Mouth.” Chadlia enlists Jmiaa’s help on a film project, initially just to make sure the plot and dialogue are authentic. But when she’s unable to find an actress who’s right for the starring role, she turns again to Jmiaa, giving the latter an incredible opportunity for a better life.

In her breakout debut novel, Meryem Alaoui creates a vibrant picture of the day-to-day challenges faced by working people in Casablanca, which they meet head-on with resourcefulness and resilience.

Sophia Rose Reviews Sassy Witch by Danielle Garrett #Tantor Audio

Today Sophia Rose is here to share her review of Sassy Witch a paranormal cozy mystery #9 in Danielle Garrett's Beachwood Harbor Magic Mysteries.
Enjoy!

Sassy Witch by Danielle Garrett, narrated by Amanda Ronconi

Paranormal Cozy Mystery

Time:  5 hours 59 minutes
Rating: 4.5

Blurb:
The winds of change have arrived and Holly's not sure she can fly.
It's Valentine's Day in Beechwood Harbor and the town is rolling out the rose-colored carpet to host a group of eager singles in an effort to boost town tourism. The sleepy town is suddenly transformed into Cupid's playground, complete with chocolate fountains, bicycles built for two, and a romantic breakfast buffet.
Of course, no one loves a singles' buffet quite like a pack of vampires. Only, they're not there for the dark-roast coffee and homemade sticky buns.
When eligible bachelors start dropping like wilted rose petals, Holly springs into action. She's quickly thrown into a tangled web of secret romances, unrequited love, and more than one blood-thirsty vamp.
In short, it's a bad time to get an eviction notice.

Sophia Rose's Review:

Valentine’s Day has Beechwood Harbor businesses pulling out all the stops to bring some tourists in during the off-season by hosting a singles’ convention and wouldn’t you know it, someone dangerous crashes the party.

Sassy Witch is the ninth of the Beechwood Harbor Magic mysteries.  They are connected and work best in order even if each book has a standalone mystery.

It all hits at once as usual for poor Holly and this potions witch is ready to unravel and does a little when she starts picking fights with Adam and nearly loses it.  Her issues from her past rise up and she really struggles even while she gets busy corralling the single’s event, vampires, and sets out to find a killer.  I love how the author has worked through the series to develop Holly’s personality, her relationships, and show her growth.  Not many books ago, Holly would have dissolved into petty stuff, but here, she is able to listen and hear things out.  She works hard to see things from other perspectives.

As to the paranormal mystery side, it was an interesting one with a few layers.  There is the vampire trouble that is obvious as Holly confronts an arrogant one, but there is the oddity about Posey and worries that Posey is going poltergeist the way she reacts to things lately.  I also liked that background mystery Merrill brings up about conspiracies in the SPA and what is going on with the rogue vampires.  I hope that gets expanded on in the next few books.  It was fun seeing Holly, Adam, Nick, Merrill, Evangeline, and Harmony working the case together and the suspenseful climax.

Amanda Ronconi hit her stride long before and is a fab narrator match for this series.  She has a wry humor that works with Holly’s personality and the rest of the gang.  I like the way she voices the characters and the tone she takes as she narrates the story whether it is Holly thinking through a problem or the pace picking up for a chase of a villain.

I loved the way things resolved in this one and look forward to seeing what comes next for the mansion residents and Holly.  Those who enjoy a good paranormal twist to a cozy mystery, light feel to the writing, and engaging well-developed characters all in one- try this series out.

My thanks to Tantor Audio for the opportunity to listen to this book in exchange for an honest review.

Audio Review-The Indomitable Florence Fitch Interview with author Robert J. Mrazek

Seventy Five years ago tomorrow, September 2, 1945  marked the official end of WWII, the deadliest military conflict in history where a total of 70-85 million people perished. It was a time in history that should NEVER be forgotten especially now when there are so few left who lived during that time. It was also 100 years ago last month that the US passed the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. Today I'm super excited to bring you the story of a very special woman, a wife, a mother, a war hero, a survivor.  And super excited to share with you a conversation with the author, Robert J. Mrazek.
No matter the format this is a MUST READ for all!

Overview:
“An American hero-long forgotten-finally gets her due in this riveting narrative. You will absolutely love Florence Finch: her grit, her compassion, her fight. This isn’t just history; she is a woman for our times.”

-Keith O’Brien, the New York Times bestselling author of Fly Girls

The riveting story of an unsung World War II hero who saved countless American lives in the Philippines, told by an award-winning military historian.

When Florence Finch died at the age of 101, few of her Ithaca, NY neighbors knew that this unassuming Filipina native was a Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, whose courage and sacrifice were unsurpassed in the Pacific War against Japan. Long accustomed to keeping her secrets close in service of the Allies, she waited fifty years to reveal the story of those dramatic and harrowing days to her own children.

Florence was an unlikely warrior. She relied on her own intelligence and fortitude to survive on her own from the age of seven, facing bigotry as a mixed-race mestiza with the dual heritage of her American serviceman father and Filipina mother.

As the war drew ever closer to the Philippines, Florence fell in love with a dashing American naval intelligence agent, Charles “Bing” Smith. In the wake of Bing’s sudden death in battle, Florence transformed from a mild-mannered young wife into a fervent resistance fighter. She conceived a bold plan to divert tons of precious fuel from the Japanese army, which was then sold on the black market to provide desperately needed medicine and food for hundreds of American POWs. In constant peril of arrest and execution, Florence fought to save others, even as the Japanese police closed in.

With a wealth of original sources including taped interviews, personal journals, and unpublished memoirs, The Indomitable Florence Finch unfolds against the Bataan Death March, the fall of Corregidor, and the daily struggle to survive a brutal occupying force. Award-winning military historian and former Congressman Robert J. Mrazek brings to light this long-hidden American patriot. The Indomitable Florence Finch is the story of the transcendent bravery of a woman who belongs in America’s pantheon of war heroes.
