My #Simon&Schuster audio review:
Lassiter
Black Dagger Brotherhood #21
JR Ward
Taking a phrase from any of the brothers, Holy F-Bomb I mean
when the warden wants to shake things up she doesn’t put on her blinker, oh no,
she goes through the intersection at mach speed.
Well, I’m getting ahead of myself so let me start from the
beginning, then I’ll go off on a tangent But never fear my review is as always
spoiler free. 😉
Lassiter is a revelation, a fast paced from beginning
to end twisty turny explosive series evolution. Lassiter is trying to
prevent the demon Devinia and the Omega’s son Lash from forming a bond knowing
the power they would possess together might mean the end of the Vampire race,
but to do so might mean losing his soul and probably his own true love who just
came into his life.
Meanwhile, the brothers are having to deal with the return
of the Lessening society as Lash has singlehandedly created a new and improved
army of Lessers, plus since Lash was raised as a Vampire he’s got inside
knowledge that his father the Omega didn’t and that makes him super dangerous.
Lassiter’s story for me was unexpected yet a welcome
addition to the saga, I mean when you’ve got 21 books in a series under your belt
there has to be new directions, or the stories get stale and Lassiter is about
as fresh as you get. Longtime fans have seen the fallen angel mature going from
Golden Girls watching, annoying eclectic fashionista to protector of the race
when The Scribe Virgin appoints him in her stead.
Now for Rahvyn, in book 19 fans fleetingly meet Rahvy but she’s
got a main role in #20 when fans really get to know her and her nightmarish
backstory. Rahvyn comes with as much if
not more baggage than Lassiter seeing she’s got the power of reanimation with
benefits and must deal with the consequences of turning someone immortal.
Readers/listeners fasten your seat belts because once you
pass the halfway mark of Lassiter your heart will be beating out of your
chest while you try to get your head around what the F-bomb is happening. And
once you get to the OMG ending the only thing you’ll want is the next
installation because did I mention the OMG ending. Fans of this, must be read
in order, series will not be able to put this novel down.
Narration:
The incomparable Jim Frangione, the voice of the BDB series once again gives a
flawless performance as every character in the novel. Putting just the right
touch of emotion or lack thereof just where it needs to be making him the
perfect and only choice for narrating this series and giving listeners an
unfair advantage over readers.
