#GIVEAWAY - Interview - Review People Die In Sunshine by Gloria Nagy- Author/Guide

Sometimes you find a voice in literature that speaks to you and a title of a book that just screams READ ME that's exactly what I thought when my publicist friend David owner of Author/Guide sent me a copy of People Die in Sunshine, the latest from International best seller Gloria Nagy. I picked the author's brain a bit and am also sharing my review. Plus if that's not enough Gloria has graciously offered a signed copy for one of you! Details below

Overview:

New York Times Best Selling Author, Gloria Nagy sliced through the social fabric of the North Shore of Long Island in A HOUSE IN THE HAMPTONS and now she aims her razor sharp talents on Miami--the new hot spot for glamour, greed and gore.

The Sunshine State will need a far higher level of SPF!

People Die in Sunshine is the carnival ride through the externally glamorous, but internally twisted lives of those two people, Frederick and Coco Rothenstein and their world; one most of us only know about from reading true crime stories and news accounts of the lives of the super-rich and entitled dwellers in the bastions of wealth and privilege where families such as the Rothensteins reign. The first four words of Gloria Nagy's scorching, ironic tale of greed, glamour, envy, avarice and the Janus headed coin of love and hate are: "Money. Money. Money. Money." What Ms. Nagy accomplishes in a work of humor, heartbreak, murder, and redemption reinforces those four words. A theme reflecting the world we have created that rises and falls with the same quite simple motivation that has driven every facet of human life since man stood upright. It is not the world we want to see, but it is the real world and where better to set a novel that is as much a social chronicle of our times as it is a gripping tale of the maze like search for a killer, than Miami.

The Miami of the twenty-first century, a glittering city in the sun which has become a symbol of the new American Dream--retirement ease, new beginnings or a haven for sketchy characters with dubious histories and too much money to spend. In a large cast of characters diverse in ethnicity, wealth, morality and status, Ms. Nagy shines her own unique sunlight on a cross section of this city of multi-cultural strivers and survivors, finding humanity in even the most flawed inhabitants of her singular human circus. This is a robust and tightly constructed romp through her slice of the sludge beneath the shimmering sand and as in all of her work, she sees and she sears.

Carlos Montoya crossed one line by forsaking his culture’s unquestioning faith. He leapt past another, as he entered California illegally during the free-love, irreligious 1960s.
There, three women tempted him to abandon more of his limits.
One sought to comfort him.
One used him against her husband—his employer—in marital combat.
One demanded everything.
That summer of 1968, he fled California, falsely accused, beaten, and terrified.
Twenty-six years later, in Michoacán Mexico, the beautiful Lilia Gomez arrives on Carlos’s doorstep, challenging him to recall those days and to question his old transgressions. And lurking in his background, what must never be revealed, is the major crime that haunts his past.

Overview:
A remembrance of love in a time of war.

92-year-old Henry Budge defies most of his family by escaping a rehab hospital to make his way to France for the ceremonies of the 70th observance of D-Day. Before he dies, he hopes to at last address a grief he has allowed to simmer for decades and to rekindle memories of Élodie Bedier, the French Resistance fighter with whom he fell in love 70 years earlier, as a way of confronting his grief at losing her.

During his return journey, he relives events of 1944: being wounded as he parachutes into Normandy; falling in love with Élodie who nurses him back to health; fighting the Germans alongside her and her resistance companions; and finally abandoning the war to rescue a group of children from the Holocaust, choices that leave Henry at risk of a firing squad for desertion and Élodie vulnerable to fatal condemnation from her compatriots. When he arrives back in France, Henry makes several shocking discoveries that shake the very foundations of the memories he’s had of Élodie all these years and he is left to wonder about the love he has had for Élodie: what rests on true memory vs. what is based on countless imagined conversations over the decades?

Overview:

Five years removed from the most traumatizing night of her life that put her in an amnesiac state and took her young son away from her, Jessica Mack is thrust into a role that she is reluctant to occupy. A four-year-old boy has gone missing and is presumed to be in serious danger. Jessica’s ability to be a communication conduit with the deceased provides clues that she must act on with her inner circle of allies in order to rescue the boy before it’s too late. With her friend Zach Smith, an FBI agent with whom she solved a previous case, and Sage Boles, a mutual friend who has some secrets of his own but seemingly a big heart, Jessica must learn to use her gift/curse to prevent another tragedy from occurring.

Each of the characters in this book has so much personality that the reader can’t help but form a living image of them in their imagination. As a protagonist, Jessica has so much heart after having lost so much, plus wanting to find a purpose in her life no matter how she wishes that hers could be more normal and pleasant, that she becomes easily relatable. The mystery itself is a full-throttle, intensely suspenseful crisis that catches one’s breath away and demands that the pages keep turning. Using elements of forensics and the author’s knowledge in mediumship, and tying in neatly with not just the previous Jessica Mack story but the author’s celebrated Claudia Rose Forensic Handwriting Mystery series, there are equal parts coziness and suspense to this story. Readers who enjoy this genre will no doubt add Lowe to their list of preferred authors after this book.

Her nerves are frayed, she’s disengaged, and her frustrated daughter, Shorie, is pulling away from her. Maybe Erin’s friends and family are right. Shorie is not only worried about her mother’s mental state but also for the future of her parents’ company. Especially when she begins to suspect that not all of Erin’s colleagues can be trusted. It seems someone is spinning an intricate web of deception—the foundation for a conspiracy that is putting everything, and everyone she loves, at risk. And she may be the only one who can stop it.
Now, thousands of miles away in a remote, and oftentimes menacing, tropical jungle, Erin is beginning to have similar fears. Overview:
The romance between F. Scott Fitzgerald and Zelda Sayre has been celebrated as one of the greatest of the 20th century. From the beginning, their relationship was a tumultuous one, in which the couple’s excesses were as widely known as their passion for each other. Despite their love, both Scott and Zelda engaged in flirtations that threatened to tear the couple apart. But none had a more profound impact on the two—and on Scott’s writing—as the liaison between Zelda and a French aviator, Edouard Jozan. Though other biographies have written of Jozan as one of Scott’s romantic rivals, accounts of the pilot’s effect on the couple have been superficial at best.

In The Gatsby Affair: Scott, Zelda, and the Betrayal That Shaped an American Classic, Kendall Taylor examines the dalliance between the southern belle and the French pilot from a fresh perspective. Drawing on conversations and correspondence with Jozan’s daughter, as well as materials from the Jozan family archives, Taylor sheds new light on this romantic triangle. More than just a casual fling, Zelda’s tryst with Edouard affected Scott as much as it did his wife—and ultimately influenced the author’s most famous creation, Jay Gatsby. Were it not for Zelda’s affair with the pilot, Scott’s novel might be less about betrayal and more about lost illusions.

Exploring the private motives of these public figures, Taylor offers new explanations for their behavior. In addition to the love triangle that included Jozan, Taylor also delves into an earlier event in Zelda’s life—a sexual assault she suffered as a teenager—one that affected her future relationships. Both a literary study and a probing look at an iconic couple’s psychological makeup, The Gatsby Affair offers readers a bold interpretation of how one of America’s greatest novels was influenced.

Overview:
Mapping stories set in Europe and America, The Dead Still Here skillfully paces through eleven short stories about friends-with-benefits typed relationships, vicious divorces and thievery, the loss of a child, the loss of a mother, and the Coast Guard and the Navy rescuing refugees from a bad storm at sea. Laura Valeri writes one single breathtaking sentence about sex, Dear John emails, and Christmas presents in "Liabilities of a Love Misguided" and vividly recreates that sharp sense of self-consciousness in "What They Know." Along with characters that are irrevocably locked in their heads, Valeri includes a guide on how to take medication in "Prescription for Life," which subtly points to the other hallucinatory narratives. This collection is at once provocative and lucid, and it offers various angles of characters looking for a relationship to hold.

Overview:
At an AA meeting, handyman and part-time investigator Jay Porter meets a recovering addict who needs his help. In the midst of another grueling northern New Hampshire winter, Amy Lupus’ younger sister, Emily, has gone missing from the Coos County Center, the newly opened rehab run by Jay’s old nemeses, Adam and Michael Lombardi. As Jay begins looking into Emily’s disappearance, he finds that all who knew Emily swear that she’s never used drugs. She’s a straight shooter and an intern at a newspaper investigating the Center and the horrendous secret hidden in it—or beneath it.
When Jay learns of a “missing” hard drive, he is flung back to five years ago when his own junkie brother, Chris, found a hard drive belonging to Lombardi Construction. For years Jay assumed that the much-sought-after hard drive contained incriminating photos of Adam and Michael’s father, which contributed to Chris’ death. But now he believes the hard drive harbored a secret far more sinister, which the missing Lupus sister may have unwittingly discovered. The deeper Jay digs, the more poisoned the ground gets, and the two cases become one, yielding a toxic truth with local fallout—and far-reaching ramifications.

Overview:
Bruno Johnson, a newly minted LA County Sheriff Violent Crimes detective, gets the worst assignment possible—infiltrate a Sheriff’s narcotics team that may be involved in murder for hire. Gain their trust and be brought into the scheme. If he succeeds, he will have to arrest and testify against his fellow deputies—if he lives that long.

To make matters worse, before Bruno leaves home on the first day of this assignment, he answers the door to find an ex-girlfriend. Without explanation, she hands him a baby girl only weeks old. The child is his. Stunned and terrified, he now faces immediate fatherhood as well as the traitor-like charge to take down his colleagues.
Juggling his complex home life, Bruno tackles his assignment to discover that no one is whom they seem to be and that his own boss, Lieutenant Wicks, might be involved. His mission is further complicated when an attractive female deputy, recently transferred from Public Affairs, is also put on the case. She has no street experience and Bruno carries the extra burden of watching her back—a tough assignment made tougher by personal attraction.
As Bruno gets deeper and deeper into the corruption, he doesn’t know who to trust, and in the end, confides in the wrong person.
