Dragon Bound is the first in a spicy hot paranormal romance series, The Elder Races, by a new to me author (I know, ugh, waited forever) and new to me narrator.  Thea Harrison wove a world that felt like an urban fantasy world with the many fantasy races and creatures that live alongside humans.  There is a brilliant and large cast of characters who all promise well for their own stories. 

 

Dragos is an ancient beast of a dragon and the only pure dragon in existence since the wyr are a lesser race.  The world is divided by human geo-political lines, but also is sectioned off by paranormal racial governing regions.  Dragos rules the northeast areas of the States while Fae are to his southern border and dark fae on his western border.  His life is ho hum with a bit of political intrigue with his dark fae enemy until a sneaky thief hits one of his hoard stashes.

 

Pia, a half-wyr half-human and a whole lot of mystery about her magical mother’s heritage she got, was the one to thump Drago’s snout with her theft.  The dragon surprises her and they end up on the run together figuring out who is behind the trouble Pia was forced to be part of.  He should have flame-broiled her or made her a mini-munch snack, but turns out Dragos enjoys Pia’s unpredictable actions and sassy mouth, and well, quite a bit about her.  He gets the gimmies over Pia and she discovers that domineering dragons are her cuppa.  Though, she will not let the big guy have it all his own way.

 

I was totally into it right up until it started to lose me a little.  Pia was a mixed bag for me.  I found her annoying half the time.  She was an inconsistent character and not because she was growing as a character.  Like when she claims to need to keep it on the down low and then blazes a trail a blind and deaf non-supernatural could follow.

And, then there was the sex like every five minutes (on the audio).  I would no sooner start getting into the rhythm of the plot and the world building then we’d have to pull off for a sizzling hot quickie.  Don’t get me wrong.  I’m as into a scorching hot scene as the next person.  I started fast-forwarding through to keep up the pace and tension of being on the run and not knowing why and who was behind the danger after them.  That worked better for me.

 

Now, I will say that when I first encountered the male lead, an incredible old, powerful, and wealthy dragon living high in his NYC tower with his Seven, oops, I mean band of nearly as powerful Sentinels and one his trusty Second, I was thinking thoughts of a very similar set up in another series, but there, the comparisons ended for me.

 

Sophie Eastlake made the world of the series and the characters come to life.  She told a good action scene, lusty scenes simmered, and the humor was brought out well.  I hope she does the whole series.

 

Wow, stellar finish and set up for more of the series.  And, I really enjoyed the playful banter times and how the pair formed a partnership on the run.  The surrounding cast have many intriguing figures.  There were some solid twists now and then.  I can totally see why this is a beloved series.  Recommend to paranormal romance fans who like a read hot enough to require an iced glass of a favorite cold drink.
