GoodReads Synopsis:

Picking up right where A Longer Fall left off, this thrilling third installment follows Lizbeth Rose as she takes on one of her most dangerous missions yet: rescuing her estranged partner, Prince Eli, from the Holy Russian Empire. Once in San Diego, Lizbeth is going to have to rely upon her sister Felicia, and her growing Grigori powers to navigate her way through this strange new world of royalty and deception in order to get Eli freed from jail where he's being held for murder.

Russian Cage continues to ramp up the momentum with more of everything Harris' readers adore her for with romance, intrigue, and a deep dive into the mysterious Holy Russian Empire.

#1 'New York Times' best-selling author Charlaine Harris (Sookie Stackhouse mysteries and Midnight, Texas trilogy) continues to ramp up the momentum with more of everything Harris' readers adore her for with romance, intrigue and a deep dive into the mysterious Holy Russian Empire in the much loved Gunnie Rose series.

Sophia Rose's Review:

Pressing forward through this exciting alternate history magical series, I eagerly snatched up The Russian Cage to see what came next for Gunnie Lizbeth Rose.  Eli has been arrested and Lizbeth leaves all that is familiar to her, journeying west to the Holy Russian Empire on a quest to free Eli.  Charlaine Harris’ series continues to hold strong three books in.

The Gunnie Rose series presents a different adventure with each book, but it is very much a series tied closely together so it really needs to be read in order.

Lizbeth gets a peculiar letter from her half-sister, Felicia, who is at Grigori school in San Diego.  Puzzling out the hints, Lizbeth works out that Eli was arrested once he got home from their last mission.  She kept the secret from him that she fell in love with him and has been struggling to accept that they can never be together because he’s a Russian prince from a different way of life.  However, when Eli needs her, she is there.

Everything about the new Russian empire is foreign and Lizbeth flounders as she tries to figure out how best to access Eli and get him out.  She meets his intimidating aristocratic mother and sisters though she can’t help realizing that for all their grandness, women of that station are very dependent and Lizbeth would hate the confining lifestyle.  She gets in touch with her sister, realizing that her best intentions to give Felicia a better life, put her sister in this lonely, difficult Grigori world where she had to sink or swim on her own.  Felicia is happy to see Lizbeth and isn’t a helpless wilting flower so she wants to help her big sister.  Another surprising ally comes from the cranky, unfriendly Grigori Felix.  Lizbeth is shocked to learn why he’s detested her all this time and it's not because she’s a hick Gunnie.

The blend of adventure, political intrigue, and an all-new setting from the alternative history Gunnie Rose world made the Russian Cage riveting from first to last.  I was glad to see Lizbeth’s world expand as she learns more about herself while encountering all that is new, but I also loved seeing big progress in her situation with Eli and her newly-found sister.

The ending was suspenseful and Lizbeth showed her tough, resourcefulness once again.  I was forced to switch audiobook editions since the library didn’t have the Graphic Audio edition, but I found familiar, talented Eva Kaminsky was a grand replacement.  She voiced the characters and their accents so well and caught the spirit of the story spot on.

Another abso-fabulous installment in the Gunnie Rose series.  I’m eagerly pressing onward in the series for what comes next.

Author Bio:

Two thousand twenty-three will mark Charlaine’s forty-second year as a published writer. She has written two stand-alones, and her series include the Aurora Teagarden mysteries, the Lily Bard mysteries, the Sookie Stackhouse urban fantasies, the Harper Connelly urban fantasies, the Midnight, Texas novels, the Cemetery Girl graphic novels (with Christopher Golden), and the Gunnie Rose books, set in an alternate history America. Charlaine has also written many short stories, and together with Toni L.P. Kelner she edited seven themed anthologies (and had great fun). Her books have sold over 39 million copies worldwide.

The television series “True Blood” was based on Charlaine’s Sookie Stackhouse novels. Hallmark Movies and Mysteries is still showing a series of movies created about the Aurora Teagarden character, and for two seasons “Midnight, Texas” was on the air. Two of her other series are in production.

Charlaine belongs to several professional organizations and is an avid reader. She and her husband live on a cliff overlooking the Brazos River with their rescue dogs. Charlaine has the joy of being a grandmother, and she attends the Episcopalian church.

Sophia’s Bio:

Sophia is a quiet though curious gal who dabbles in cooking, book reviewing, piano-playing, and gardening. Road trips and campouts, museums and monuments, restaurants and theaters are her jam. Encouraged and supported by an incredible man and loving family. A Northern Californian transplant to the Great Lakes Region of the US. Lover of Jane Austen, Baseball, Cats, Scooby Doo, and Chocolate.

As a lifelong reader, it was inevitable that Sophia would discover book blogs and the joy of blog reviewing. Sophia is a prolific reader and audiobook listener which allows her to experience so many wonderful books, authors, and narrators. Few genres are outside her reading tastes, but her true love is fiction particularly history, mystery, sci-fi, and romance. Though, sorry, no horror or she will run like Shaggy and Scooby.
