GoodReads Synopsis:

Three months ago, I landed a job as a bartender. But not at a bar—at a guild. Yeah, the magic kind.

I'm not a badass mage like my three smokin' hot best friends. I'm not a sorcerer or an alchemist, or even a wussy witch. I'm just a human, slinging drinks like a pro and keeping my non-magical nose out of mythic business. Seriously, I know my limits.

So why am I currently standing in a black-magic ritual circle across from a fae lord?

Somewhere behind me, my three mage friends are battling for their lives. Somewhere near my feet is the rogue witch I just knocked out with a stolen spell. And I have about five seconds to convince this very angry sea god not to shmoosh me like a bug.

I'm pretty sure this wasn't part of the job description.

Sophia Rose's Review:

Progressing through the series, Tori had to eventually catch the eye of the magical police.  Now, she must lay low until the MPD go back to chasing real criminals.  Only, its Tori and her idea of laying low is running afoul of a guild specializing in the dark form of magic and fae troubles.  Annette Marie’s Guild Codex series continues to hold its own, grow the characters, and deliver exciting urban fantasy adventures with each new release.

Two Witches and a Whiskey is the third of the Guild Codex: Spellbound series and fourth in the Guild Codex Universe of stories.  The Spellbound books are tightly linked and must be read in order.

In Two Witches and a Whiskey, the story opens with the Magical Police dropping in on the guild to investigate the events that occurred toward the end of the previous book.  Tori and Ezra both broke magical laws so the Crow and Hammer guild master, Darius has put her on leave and told her to lay low while he sorts it out.

Tori being Tori with her past and issues of abandonment and wanting to fit in- to keep from being abandoned- goes home and starts stewing right away.  She has no patience to trust Darius and her friends.  In fact, she’s convinced within days that they hung her out to dry so she gets maudlin and gets drunk.  A couple witches come knocking and next thing she knows, they have spread it around that Tori promised the guild’s help in tracking down a rogue guild who are disappearing small fae at the park in their coven’s territory and are trying to enslave a powerful fae as their familiar.

Tori is all over the place emotionally in this one.  She’s so desperate not to get ditched and spends a lot of time stuck in her head and depressed that she can’t be “special” like all the magical-endowed people she knows.  Her brother wants to be there for her, but she’s still blaming him for stuff he couldn’t control and he’s not special-enough for her like her ‘real’ friends. (Yes, I got a lotta sick of Tori’s whining ‘why mes’ and the world revolves around me.)  Because of this mindset, she pulls a lot of impulsive stupids and gets herself and other people in danger.  She’s told to lay low and she goes out to eat.  She’s given body guards and she ditches them.  She claims these are her friends and doesn’t hesitate to keep secrets and put them in danger.  She plays hot and cold with Aaron’s feelings.

But, sigh, I saw this book as her ‘see the light’ moment.  She had to face all this and she does see what she’s done- to a certain extent- and she’s sorry.  She also has a lucky streak that gets her through some dangerous, pulse-pounding moments once things really get rolling.  There was a big series plot twist that comes into this one and I’m hoping that this will get Tori past a boat-load of her issues and she can move on.

All in all, it was loaded with drama, but still delivered on all I love about this series.  I can’t wait to keep going.  Urban Fantasy fans need to get this series on their reading lists.

Sophia’s Bio:

Sophia is a quiet though curious gal who dabbles in cooking, book reviewing, piano-playing, and gardening. Road trips and campouts, museums and monuments, restaurants and theaters are her jam. Encouraged and supported by an incredible man and loving family. A Northern Californian transplant to the Great Lakes Region of the US. Lover of Jane Austen, Baseball, Cats, Scooby Doo, and Chocolate.

As a lifelong reader, it was inevitable that Sophia would discover book blogs and the joy of blog reviewing. Sophia is a prolific reader and audiobook listener which allows her to experience so many wonderful books, authors, and narrators. Few genres are outside her reading tastes, but her true love is fiction particularly history, mystery, sci-fi, and romance. Though, sorry, no horror or she will run like Shaggy and Scooby.
