GoodReads Synopsis:

When I first landed a bartending job at the local guild, I didn't know a thing about magic. These days, I'm practically an expert on the different magical classes, but there's one nobody ever talks about: Demonica.

Turns out they have a good reason for that. My guild is strictly hellion-free, because who wants to risk life and limb to control the biggest bullies on the mythic playground?

Well, some people do, and now a demon has been loosed in the city. My three best friends are determined to slay it, but even badass combat mages are critically out-magicked. And that's not all. The monster they're tracking—it's not hiding. It's not fleeing. It's not leaving a trail of corpses everywhere it goes.

The demon is hunting too. And in a city full of mythics, it's searching for deadlier prey.

If we can’t unravel the demon’s sinister motivations, more innocent people will die, but finding the answers means digging into dark secrets … and learning truths I never wanted to know.

Sophia Rose's Review:

A human bartender working for a magical Guild gets to know some things, but there is one form of magic Tori has remained ignorant on up until now- demonica.  But, when someone sets a demon loose on the city and it seems to be gunning for one of her particular friends, Tori gets a crash course in demon magic really quick.

Demon Magic and a Martini is the fourth of the Guild Codex: Spellbound series and fifth in the Guild Codex World.  This is a read in order urban fantasy series and though there are four sub-series within the Guild Codex World, I’ve found those work best mingled into one series, too.

Tori along with Aaron, Kai, and Ezra were enjoying a relatively quiet time since their last escapade together in which Tori became a full-fledged card-carrying Magick, but then visitors from another guild pop in and, color her curious, Tori is intrigued on two levels.  One, this pair are from a strong Demonica guild and they are a  demon contractor and his ‘champion’, but two, Kai has a history with the beautiful woman champion.  Just as she’s set to dig into this interesting disclosure, a magical APB goes out to everyone that a demon’s loose in the city and all combat trained are to report in to track it while the non-combatants shelter in place and help set up med, food, and sleeping stations at the Guild headquarters.

About now, Tori realizes something is off with Ezra when Darius the guild master and her other two best friends are in the midst of things, but Ezra is put on guard duty at HQ.  Slowly and by painful, personal discovery and growth, she finally learns the truth about Ezra’s past even as that contractor-less demon is laser focused and doing his own tracking.  There’s a dangerous rogue demon-hunting guild that seem nearly as dangerous as the demon.  Tori will need to reach deep if she is to be any help on this one.

Demon Magic and a Martini really dug deep emotionally and delivered a tense action sequence, too.  I loved the reveals into Ezra- wow, just wow, and appreciate the friendship Tori has joined and the leadership quality and power Darius demonstrated.

Tori really got caught up in herself in the last book, but her personal growth in this one was well-paced and kept me cheering for her.  She’s really making a place for herself in the guild and her found family.  Can’t wait to see what comes next with this series- especially with the new characters and Demonized side-series intro that took place.

Sophia’s Bio:

Sophia is a quiet though curious gal who dabbles in cooking, book reviewing, piano-playing, and gardening. Road trips and campouts, museums and monuments, restaurants and theaters are her jam. Encouraged and supported by an incredible man and loving family. A Northern Californian transplant to the Great Lakes Region of the US. Lover of Jane Austen, Baseball, Cats, Scooby Doo, and Chocolate.

As a lifelong reader, it was inevitable that Sophia would discover book blogs and the joy of blog reviewing. Sophia is a prolific reader and audiobook listener which allows her to experience so many wonderful books, authors, and narrators. Few genres are outside her reading tastes, but her true love is fiction particularly history, mystery, sci-fi, and romance. Though, sorry, no horror or she will run like Shaggy and Scooby.
