After recent momentous events, the dragon world is teetering on the edge of chaos between the fiery fighting of major dragons, the insidious work of the evil Snapdragons, and the Blue Order discovering secrets that will wedge division among its members. The Darcys and their dragons are at the heart of the maelstrom and must find a way to bring calm and strength. But how, when their own moorings are coming undone?
Maria Grace’s Jane Austen’s Dragon series continues to grip me and leave me wanting more even with Dragons on the Edge being sixteen installments into a series that promises intense suspense and intrigue, a unique blend of Regency and dragons, and characters with the complex blend of strength and flaws that make it all work wonderfully well.
Dragons on the Edge has returned the setting to the Pemberley dragon estate in Derbyshire where the repercussions from two great fire dragons, Cornwall and Matlock’s battle has left a vacuum in major dragon leadership, where the hidden Historian and his obnoxious and oblivious dragon assistant Bede continue to turn up dangerous dragon secrets of the past, where the enemy Snapdragons are peddling their wares made from dragons and have harnessed an ancient dragon drug that brings down major and minor alike. On top of all this, Elizabeth’s pregnancy is difficult and sapping her strength when she is needed most, Elizabeth’s non-dragon hearing relations are becoming entangled in trouble due to being influenced by someone trying to use them against Sir Fitzwilliam and the Lady Sage. On top of that, rogue dragons are making incursions onto dragon estates and Pemberley because of her youth is considered a vulnerable dragon to these rogues.
Dragons on the Edge feels like a dramatic frenzy of helplessness at first. There is so much coming at them from every direction and its all taking its toll. There is a sense that Darcy, Elizabeth, and their dragon friends will crack under the pressure. But, I loved that at the center of it all, young Pemberley shows her human dragon mentors that she has been learning and growing- she is strong and ready for all her youth. Also, Sir Richard, Lydia and Netherford are all working against Snapdragon activity and proving they are ready and able allies. Minor dragons loyal and true might not have the great strength of the major dragons, but they are not to be discounted, either. A sad event does transpire (loss of infants) that brings the Dragon Sage and her husband to their lowest. It happens at the heart of the story and their grief and recovery leading into the big confrontations at the end made this a tough one to read, but also a strong piece to the saga.
While this gets darker than previous books, it ends in a triumphant happy for now as grand events loom on the horizon. A trigger warning to those who must be cautious though a deep, hard-hitting solid book in the series. Gaslamp fantasy fans who love well-written dragon worlds with dragons being of equal importance as their human counterparts, don’t hesitate to start this series.
