"The bedrooms are ready upstairs. Thought we'd let the nurse take the master. You don't mind sharing the hall bath with me on the weekends, do you?"
I smile, hoping it doesn't come across as forced as it feels. "I've gone months with nothing but a bucket, a bar of soap and a muddy stream. I think I can handle sharing a bathroom."
One corner of Cal's mouth rises in what looks almost like pride. "You'd make someone a fine huntin' partner."
He motions for me to follow him into the kitchen at the back of the house, where he points to a credit card and iPhone on the Formica counter. "Jennie stocked the kitchen with the basics, but there's enough money on that account to buy anything else you need. You probably won't need it for a couple of days, though."
I peek into the refrigerator, check the cabinets above the coffee machine, peer around the corner into the open pantry. "There's enough food here to feed half of Hawkins County for weeks."
Cal smiles. "That's the great thing about Jennie. She always goes above and beyond." He plucks the iPhone from the counter and passes it to me. "She also programmed all the numbers you'll need into the phone. The lead officer assigned to the case will be calling to set up a meeting first thing tomorrow morning. The hospice nurse arrives tomorrow morning at eight, and the motorcade and ambulance with your father, sometime before noon. And the local doctors, hospitals and the funeral home have been notified."
"Sounds like everything's been taken care of."
He smiles, and his voice softens. "Just trying to make things as easy as possible for you, darlin'. I know you'd rather be anywhere but here."
I think of some of the worst places I've been sent. Over-populated Dhaka, where if the water doesn't kill you, the air will. The slums of Abidjan after floods and mudslides have swept away too many of its children. The dusty streets of Dadaab, the world's largest refugee camp, where malnutrition and cholera compete for leading cause of death.

"And don't think you're completely out here on your own," he says after a long stretch of silence. "I'm less than an hour down the road, and so are your brother and sister. Do me a favor and don't let either of them off the hook, okay? This concerns their father, too."
I half nod, half shrug. When it comes to our father, Bo would rather bury himself in his work than admit the situation affects him, while Lexi prefers to pretend he's already dead. How can I let my siblings off the hook when neither of them are willing to acknowledge there is one? It seems as if the only person not getting off the hook around here is me.
Cal pulls me in for a hug, dropping a kiss on the top of my head. "Call me anytime, okay? Day or night. I'll pick up, no matter where I am or what I'm doing."

He scrubs a hand through his hair, now salt-and-pepper but still thick and shiny as ever. "Because I'm busy stalling the retrial. God willing and the creek don't rise, your father won't spend another second of his life in either a courtroom or a prison cell."

The sharp, bitter scent reminds me of some of my British colleagues, who are convinced a spot of tea is the cure to all emotional ails. My boss, Elsie, a hard-nosed type, drinks enough of the stuff to poison her liver
thanks to the generous splash of bourbon she adds when things in the field get really hairy. If only life were that easy.
Unlike the satellite phone I carry in the field, Cal's iPhone has only a handful of contacts, most of them people I've never met and, after burying my father, will probably never think of again. It doesn't take me long to find Bo.
His cell goes straight to voice mail, so I leave what must be my fifth message in as many days, careful to keep my voice level. Like so
many writers, my path wasn’t direct. I worked for many years in the nonprofit industry,
though unlike Gia, I had a desk job. The brochures and donor mailings I created
fed my writing itch for a while, but there was always this secret hunger clawing
at the back of my mind…one that just wouldn’t quit. Eventually, it became too
big and loud for me to ignore, so I quit my day job and came out of the writing
closet. It took me many more years to get to “The End” on The Last Breath, but
I didn’t regret my decision for one second. Writing a book is one of the
hardest things I’ve ever done, but also the most fulfilling.
So you turned in your manuscript and you got the “I sold my book”
call.
What was the first thing you did after you received the news?

My agent
called to tell me the news as I was walking into a meeting. I get together once
a month with seven other women to discuss the highs and lows in our business,
family, and personal lives. We do much more than just commiserate; we share
experiences, offer support, and hold each other accountable to our goals.
They’re like my own personal board of directors, and they’ve been there with and
for me from the very start. Sharing my good news that day with some of my best friends
and biggest cheerleaders was especially thrilling.
How emotionally invested did you the writer become in Gia’s story?
Was it hard to leave her behind when the novel ended?
Yes! By the
time I finish writing and editing a book, the characters are like real people,
and the scenes feel like real memories in my mind. Gia is no different. But
what makes Gia extra special to me are all the ways we’re similar. We both grew
up in Eastern Tennessee and couldn’t wait to escape. We both have gypsy souls
and chose a profession that allowed us to travel the globe. I guess you could
say I put a lot of myself, both consciously and unconsciously, into creating
her, and that made it especially hard to be done with her story.
Kimberly you encourage book clubs to seek you out for either an
in-person or skype discussion.

Do you think you will always feel this need to connect even after
you’ve published countless novels?
I write stories
because I have something to say, but I send them out into the world because of
readers. Readers are so smart and thoughtful and passionate about the stories
they’re reading, and I love hearing what they have to say about mine, both the
good and the bad. I can’t imagine I will ever think otherwise.
Kimberly according to your bio you are a born and bred Tennessean who
fell in love and married a Dutchman who then whisked you off to the Netherlands
where you lived for 12yrs and you now consider yourself half Dutch.

What brought your back to the states?
Quite
honestly, the Dutchman sold me on the Netherlands. I was young and in love and
I didn’t think too long and hard about it at the time, just packed my bags,
said goodbye to everyone I ever knew, and boarded a plane. Turns out that moving
was the easy part; actually staying was so much harder. I knew no one besides
the Dutchman. I didn’t speak a word of Dutch. I missed my family and friends
and sunshine and all the conveniences of life in the US. But as soon as I
stopped mourning the life I left behind and began responding to the opportunity
I’d been given, I fell in love with my new life. After twelve years there, I’m
as Dutch as any Dutch person you’ll ever meet, even though I don’t have the
passport to prove it.
Returning
to the States for my husband’s work was hard on all of us, especially the kids,
but we settled in a city that has a direct connection with Amsterdam. Living in
Atlanta makes it easy to go back and forth every year, which we’re fortunate
enough to be able to do.
What do you miss most about the Netherlands?
Hmm, that’s
a tough one. There’s so much I miss—from Amsterdam’s café culture to biking
everywhere to fields of flowers for miles and miles—but if I were to choose just
one thing, it would be spending time with the people who matter most, my Dutch
friends and family. They’re the real reason we go back every chance we get.
Kimberly can you tell us what you’re working on now?
Gladly! I
have two stories in the works.
The first is about Abigail Wolff, a former
journalist hoping to resurrect her stalled-out career with the story of a
fallen soldier and a sweeping army cover-up. She enlists the help of the
soldier’s youngest brother, Gabe, but what they uncover points them back to her
father, a retired army general whose fingerprints are all over the
cover-up. Her father’s increasingly insistent pleas to let the story die only
leave Abagail with more questions, while her shattered trust in him drives
her straight into Gabe’s arms. But the truth leaves her with an impossible
choice—write the piece that will redeem her father, or bury it to protect the
man she loves.
In the second, Carly Rose Wilson chases
down new rumors about her mother, a country music legend who died at the height
of her career. Two people stand between Carly Rose and the truth—her father, a
man who stands to lose everything if the press discovers his secret, and her
Alzheimer’s-ridden grandmother. An encounter with her first love Rex introduces
her to his young son, the one person who can still coax lucid moments from her
grandmother. With their help, Carly Rose discovers unsettling truths not just
about her mother, but about the people she has always trusted most—while Rex’s
nearness resurrects memories and feelings she thought were long buried.

I love that the author has a support group of other mothers, writers and so forth. I think that is a must for any author or heck, even any mom!

DeleteWonderful interview! I always feel like I get to know so much from the author with your questions. I can totally understand what is like moving to a different country when you don't speak a word of their language. I can surly sympathized, but I'm me true believer that those experiences enrich our lives and some how they makes us stronger.
