Who is the Alpha-est of them all?

Fact: Romance readers love alpha
heroes, so writers do their best to supply them.
Fact: Romance readers love series
about brotherhoods of heroes, so writers do their best to supply them.
Dilemma: How does the brotherhood play well together if
each guy is engineered to be an arrogant, domineering, possessive top dog?
When I designed the Horsemen
series, I had to give this some thought. Realistically, functional people find
a way to work together, but in stories we’re dealing with larger than life
personalities. I had to find a way to convincingly bring three vampires and a
werewolf, all very independent and strong warriors, into a working unit without
any of them looking subordinate to the others. In the end, the answer was to
make them very different from each other.
Sam Ralston, the vampire hero of
POSSESSED BY A WARRIOR, is a straight arrow and the one who believes in honor
and justice. He’s the one most likely to get the laundry in the hamper and make
sure everything is in tip-top shape. Mark Winspear, from POSSESSED BY AN
IMMORTAL, is far more of a loner and unlikely to get on your nerves because,
well, he’s nowhere to be found. Not that he’s a bad guy—he’s a dedicated
doctor—but do not expect him to show up for meetings or complete his paperwork.
His laundry will not be in the
hamper. Their leader, Jack Anderson, gets derailed from his position as head of
the team when he falls prey to assassins early on. He has the true alpha
nature—not just a leader, but a nurturer and rescuer. It’s significant that
everyone in the series seems to owe Jack for something—whether it’s their peace
of mind or physical well-being. Don’t worry about the laundry—he’ll just buy
you new stuff.
Which leaves Faran Kenyon of
POSSESSED BY A WOLF. He’s the only werewolf of the bunch, and chances are
there’s no laundry because he’s wearing fur—or nothing at all. He is the
youngest, but that doesn’t mean he lacks experience. After a rough upbringing,
he has plenty of street smarts and a better grasp than most of what makes
villains tick. But his version of alpha depends as much on fun as ferocity.
He’s witty, charming, and a bit of a clown. At the same time, he will take care
of business when it’s necessary—and if anyone threatens those he protects. It’s
that cold-blooded practicality that spooks his lady-love, Lexie Haven, and
sends her running from his arms.
Winning her back is a challenge,
but Faran is smart enough to know persuasion and patience are a hunter’s best tools
(and so are his cooking skills, but that’s another story). Lexie may not know
it, but once you’re possessed by a wolf, it’s only a matter of time until you
surrender.

first love.

Within

I never thought about the dilemma of bringing so many alphas and different sups together but it looks like the author gave a lot of time and thought to it and I love that. I'm sure it shows in her stories as well.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ali, yes I thought her post was fascinating!
