Catherine Ryan-Hyde’s When I Found You is a compelling, heart wrenching read, a coming of age for both man and boy about love and trust. The author does a fabulous job of pulling every emotion possible from the reader from joy to grief and everything in between. The two Nathans although seemingly so different were both just looking for love and acceptance and while the older Nathan was more charismatic it is the younger, combative belligerent Nathan that will really touch the hearts of the audience. There are also other important characters in the read like Manny and Carol who complete the fascinating story. Told from 1960 to 1999 the narrator does a wonderful job of giving the two Nathans authentic voices. Anyone looking for a wonderful piece of literary fiction about families of the heart will find this hard to put down.

Narration:
Jeff Cummings narration is easy to understand and a delightful way to enjoy this novel. He does a brilliant job with the two Nathans and does a good job with both female and male voices and his Manny is fabulous.

While out hunting with his dog Sadie one cold October morning Nathan McCann finds a newborn in the woods, he at first thinks he’s dead until the small boy moves. After taking him to the hospital Nathan decides this was a sign and wants to adopt the boy but is told that the baby’s maternal grandmother took him in so Nathan goes to the grandmother’s home and asks that if she ever wants to give him up to please consider giving him to Nathan. Fifteen years later a sullen teen and his at-her-wits-end grandmother shows up at Nathan’s door.

By the time 14-year-old Nathan (Nat) Bates shows up at Nathan’s house he’s been lied to his whole life about who he is and where he came from and when the old man tells him he’ll never give up on him Nat doesn’t believe him. Soon after his arrival at the old man’s house Nat makes a very bad decision that costs him years behind bars in Juvenile detention but like clockwork Nathan shows up for every visit he’s allowed and is there to pick him up when his incarceration is over.

The question now is can these two very different Nathans find a home with each other or will there always be a wall between them?
