Overview:

#1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts introduces an unforgettable thief in an unputdownable new novel…

Greed. Desire. Obsession. Revenge . . . It’s all in a night’s work.

Harry Booth started stealing at nine to keep a roof over his ailing mother’s head, slipping into luxurious, empty homes at night to find items he could trade for precious cash. When his mother finally succumbed to cancer, he left Chicago―but kept up his nightwork, developing into a master thief with a code of honor and an expertise in not attracting attention?or getting attached.

Until he meets Miranda Emerson, and the powerful bond between them upends all his rules. But along the way, Booth has made some dangerous associations, including the ruthless Carter LaPorte, who sees Booth as a tool he controls for his own profit. Knowing LaPorte will leverage any personal connection, Booth abandons Miranda for her own safety―cruelly, with no explanation―and disappears.

But the bond between Miranda and Booth is too strong, pulling them inexorably back together. Now Booth must face LaPorte, to truly free himself and Miranda once and for all.

My #MacmillanAudio Review:

Nightwork
Nora Roberts

In Nora Roberts’ latest stand alone she mixes it up for readers by featuring a male central character. Now Harry/Booth is charming and endearing but usually Nora leaves her top spot for a woman, he’s also a cat burglar and we’re not talking about a Robin Hood type character although readers will find it hard to find too much fault with the enigmatic master thief it’s still a bit out of character for a Nora Roberts lead player. The storyline is emotional dealing with love, loss, revenge and redemption and the characters are absolutely unforgettable especially Booth and Miranda. There are few close second in winning supporting roles like Aunt Maggs, Sebastian and Dauphine and her villain is just pure narcissistic evil (every reader will pray for his downfall). After the first third/introduction part of the novel the last two, non-stop action packed nail biting, thirds speed by. Fans of The Thomas Crown Affair, To Catch a Thief and The Sting will not be able to put this book down.

Narration:
Will Damon’s narration is absolutely first rate, his accents and superb language skills make Harry/Booth sound like a native of whatever role he’s playacting as whether it’s Cajun, French, Italian etc.. He’s also profoundly good at his female roles and gives the audience the emotional score that compliments Nora’s narrative.

When Harry was nine and his mother was fighting cancer he began his career as a thief to help pay the bills, always improving his Nightwork so that by the time his mother lost her battle he was well on his way to being a Master Thief and seasoned enough to strike out on his own. He created new identities forming a few trusted allies and always kept in touch with his beloved Aunt Maggs. He was also making a name for himself and while he did fill his pockets with other people’s possessions he followed a moral code of sorts, he also unfortunately caught the attention of Carter LaPorte one very greedy and very dangerous man.

By the time he was nineteen Harry was now known as Booth and decided to try his hand at higher education where fate took him to Chapel Hill and the University of North Carolina where all his rules went out the window when he met and fell head over heels in love with Miranda Emerson. Everything was perfect and Booth was even considering ending his Nightwork, until Carter finds him. Booth does the job for LaPorte but as soon as it’s done Booth ends things cruelly with Miranda leaving her bitter and brokenhearted but at least safe because he knows if he stays LaPorte will never be done with him and that means that Miranda will never be safe.

But fate isn’t done with these two star-crossed lovers and one day a decade later their planets align.

  3. I opted to read this one which I happen to be doing at the moment. I am not quite so in love with it so far, but have just closed in on the first third so hope it looks up. I do like the secondary characters but while I have good will towards Harry/Booth haven't totally warmed to him yet.
