The man who wants everything gets nothing…
July 1755
War is brewing between England and France. Impressed into the Royal Navy, Lieutenant Merrick, against all odds, advanced through the ranks to become an officer–but he is not a gentleman. A man with a tainted past from a traitorous family, cast down by King George–a stain no man can remove.
Merrick’s thrust into the role of captain, when the HMS Boudica is attacked by pirates off the coast of Nova Scotia. On a captured enemy vessel he discovers a King’s ransom in treasure and a woman chained in the hold from passenger ship that mysteriously disappeared at sea.
Beautiful, defiant, and hell bent on revenge, India makes a deal with Merrick to uncover the pirates’ scheme, promising him everything he desires: fortune, glory, and the chance to bring honor back to the McKesson name.
Now, they race against time to uncover a plot that links those in the highest ranks of the British aristocracy, to a failed rebellion that is once again trying to topple the monarchy and place an old pretender on the throne. But all that glitters is not gold as passions stir and an impossible love blooms, threatening to undermine all Merrick and India have done to protect their King and a country on the brink of war.

My Audible Review:
Man of War
T J London
Rebels & Redcoats Prequel
TJ’s Man of War is a non-stop action-packed nail-biting
tale full of patriotism, heroics and barbarism featuring battles at sea and
staring a large cast of unforgettable characters. The main protagonists the
star-crossed lovers of Merrick and India/Carolyn are both larger than life.
Carolyn is ahead of her time a ravaged beauty who wants to be known for her
integrity and intellect and Merrick is running from his past and his family’s
disgrace while longing for someone to love him unconditionally.
If there’s one word that keeps coming to mind in the Man
of War novel it’s authenticity, the narrative is full of authentic seaworthy
terms and descriptions of the workings on a ship of that era, it’s also full of
authentic period perfect items of clothing and vocabulary that would be used by
people of that time period. Then there are the characters some good some evil
but all authentic and listeners who enjoyed TJ’s Rebels and Redcoats novels will
easily identify the names of the characters in this novel.
As in all TJ’s Revolution novels she’s not shy about her
brutal content but it’s apparent that it’s not used for shock value, it’s used
for character building/development and especially for realism. If you’re a fan
of no holds barred historical novels staring realistic, arresting characters
than Man of War is for you.
Narration:
The full cast of narrators is the absolute best, each voice fits the character
both emotional and substantively and listeners will enjoy each and every
narrator.
Against all odds a man with a dark past and a disgraced
family rises to the rank of Captain in His Majesty’s Navy when in the summer of
1755 the HMS Boudica is attacked by French pirates killing her captain and making
Lieutenant Merrick Ship's Captain. Merrick spent his whole life trying to atone
for his oldest brother’s traitorous behavior colluding with the French and
supporting the Jacobite cause and now maybe just maybe the tides have turned in
his favor. During the battle Merrick rescues a nude woman bound by irons in the
hold of the Pirate ship and he knows
she’s not being totally honest about who she is and how she ended up at the mercy of French Pirates.
During her torture Caroline often wished she would die but once the ship she was on started sinking she knows she wants to live, scars and all, to enact revenge on her evil tormentor and all those involved in her abduction and abuse. Thankfully she’s rescued by a handsome captain and decides he’s the one she needs to convince to help her. Now she’s just got to come up with a plan without disclosing too many of her deepest secrets and hopes she’s found more than just a rescuer in her hero captain.

DeleteI do struggle a little with the gruesome moments and hit that 30 sec advance through those moments, but yes, it is part of the period and I love the attention to authentic period descriptions and dialogue. Can't wait to get to this one.
