GoodReads Synopsis:
Agent Kit Morris. Has a nice ring, doesn't it?
It's a big step up from "wanted criminal" or "that weird con-artist guy with weirder psychic powers"—both of which recently applied to me. But my promotion to MagiPol agent comes with a few drawbacks.
First, supremely talented and effortlessly gorgeous Agent Lienna Shen won't agree to a dinner date with me. Second, my new assignment has pitted me against a guild with very bad taste in pets. Third, those pets are demons, and those demons want to kill me.
My psychic magic is great for conning people. It doesn't do jack shit against hellish orcs. If I screw this up, my dinner date will be with a demon—and I'll be the dinner. Even better, I kind of suspect this supposedly straightforward assignment is actually the tip of an unholy iceberg of power-hungry malefactors bent on destroying all law and order in the city.
I should probably mention that last part to my boss.
Sophia Rose's Review:
Two weeks after the big rogue demon event that hit Vancouver and months after his incarceration and flipping to work for the MPD, Kit is facing his retest (yes he failed the first time) to becoming a fully-fledged agent. If only the boss hadn’t given Liena an ultimatum to for staying on the Vancouver force and having someone trying to kill them with murderous demons and electro-magic, he might be able to focus on passing the test.
Hellbound Guilds and Other Misdirections was the second installment in the Guild Codex: Warped series and the seventh in the Guild Codex urban fantasy universe.
As stated earlier, Kit is in the process of taking his exams to become a field agent for MagiPol, but the boss has stacked the deck against him stating enigmatically that she hired him because he’s nothing like a typical agent. Does this mean she wants him to fail?
But, meanwhile, Kit is getting nowhere with his hints to date Liena Chen who is a by-the-books-don’t-date-
Ah yes, their case. Kit used his invisibility illusion magic to overhear the boss tell Liena that if she cracks a big case involving the illegal demon activity going on then she’ll make a place for her in Vancouver. Kit isn’t going to lose Liena as his work partner- or at all- so he jumps into analyst mode and pulls up some big red flags associated with The Grand Grimoire Guild. One witness interview later and they have a dead body, a new demon problem and a lethal electro-mage and a mystic gang on their tail.
I had a blast following Kit around as he deked and dodged his way through deadly encounters and tricky investigation moments. The captain’s right in that Kit is the wild card the MPD has up their sleeve. He has a way of getting there in the end without crossing the legal lines with just a few smudgy spots. He’s got one of those charmer personalities and thinks well on his feet rather than packing big power magic in his arsenal.
At the end of my borrowed ebook version was the short story, A Little Warped, that starts the investigation on a new case for Kit and Liena. Family farm property that a certain rogue Druid from Dark Arts and a Daiquiri used to own has been blasted by black magic and a body and other items are evidence. This ends with that scene tied up and will be the prequel for the next Warped installment, Rogue Ghosts and Other Miscreants.
I could see where Hellbound Guilds and Other Misdirections fit in with what recently happened in Tori’s Demon Magic and a Martini and Robin’s Taming Demons for Beginners making it an excellent decision to read the Guild Codex Universe as one series rather than reading the four series separately. A whizbang of a urban fantasy for strong action and character development. Highly recommend.
