GoodReads Synopsis:

As a former con-artist, I love a convoluted, mind-bending scheme as much as the next guy. But as a recently promoted MagiPol agent, I love it significantly less than that guy.

Especially when the life of a kidnapped teen hangs in the balance.

Between confusing orders and conflicting evidence, this whole investigation has me and my partner, Lienna, spinning in circles. Why is our boss keeping this case off the books? Why is our top suspect, the most notorious rogue in Vancouver, mired in contradictions? And why am I the only one who cares more about the victim than their own ulterior motives?

Everyone wants me to shut up and follow orders, but that’s not my style. I’ll do whatever it takes to save this kid—even if that means returning to my roguish roots.

Sophia Rose's Review:

An off the books kidnap case assignment, the deadly and mystical Ghost at the heart, and a crisis of trust between the partners makes this latest Warped installment a compelling, all-engrossing read.  Annette Marie and Rob Jacobsen have stepped it up with their latest making this unputdownable ‘no-world-exists-but-Warped’ kind of reading.

Rogue Ghosts and Other Miscreants is the third in the Guild Codex: Warped series and the thirteenth in the Guild Codex Universe of books.  The timeline has it taking place at the same time as GC Demonized, Hunting Fiends for the Ill-Equipped even sharing a scene, but off-scene are the events of GC Spellbound’s Lost Talismans and a Tequila.

Kit and Liena are called in by Captain Blythe on the downlow.  They are assigned the kidnapping case of a teenager.  The perp is thought to be the notorious Ghost who has a string of kidnappings and killings in his wake.  To help with their off-the-books investigation, Blythe leaves them all of Shane the famous bounty hunter’s notes and evidence he left behind after his last bounty case was concluded.

From the start, Kit is uneasy about what is going on back at MPD HQ to make Blythe go this route, but he and Liena start tracking down the evidence trail left in Shane’s notes on the kidnapped victims and the Ghost.  Their trail leads them to interrogate witnesses who are shady as all get out.  Kit takes the pragmatic approach and uses his Warp magic to gain cooperation and information. Liena is appalled and says so.

But this is nothing when Kit and Liena encounter the Ghost and wants to get to the bottom of things, too.  Kit thinks there is a tarnished code of honor going on there and thinks the kidnapped teen’s best bet is to team up, but Liena has a violent reaction to this plan so there is dissention among them all.

Slowly, but surely, they follow the trail and discover just what is behind it all.  Will they be able to sort out their differences and work together before it’s too late?

Rogue Ghosts and Other Miscreants provided a pulse-pounding action-suspense case to be solved, but also dug deep into the character development when Kit is forced to ask himself if he has crossed a moral line the way he uses his magic and do the ends justify the means.  Liena confronts him and he is faced with possibly the loss of his partner and his job.  So, there was an internal conflict as enthralling as the exterior struggles.

And, it was another where the Ghost, the Crystal Druid was a strong side character so crossing lines happened a great deal as this ruthless ally has his eyes set on a different prize from Kit and Liena.

Incidentally, Crow and Hammer Guild Master, Luminamage, and former assassin, Darius King -over the course of the Guild Codex universe- has become a real favorite. He’s cunning, capable, more of a spirit of the law sort and is right there when a struggling character needs just the right hint to set them on the correct path. Plus, totally loyal to his guild full of misfits.  What’s not to love?

All in all, an amazing thrill ride that I’ve come to anticipate with each installment in the series and the Guild Codex urban fantasy world.

Sophia’s Bio:

Sophia is a quiet though curious gal who dabbles in cooking, book reviewing, piano-playing, and gardening. Road trips and campouts, museums and monuments, restaurants and theaters are her jam. Encouraged and supported by an incredible man and loving family. A Northern Californian transplant to the Great Lakes Region of the US. Lover of Jane Austen, Baseball, Cats, Scooby Doo, and Chocolate.

As a lifelong reader, it was inevitable that Sophia would discover book blogs and the joy of blog reviewing. Sophia is a prolific reader and audiobook listener which allows her to experience so many wonderful books, authors, and narrators. Few genres are outside her reading tastes, but her true love is fiction particularly history, mystery, sci-fi, and romance. Though, sorry, no horror or she will run like Shaggy and Scooby.
