Overview:

An Amazon Charts, #1 Wall Street Journal, and USA Today best-selling series.

She’s investigating a cold case no one else could - by going places no else would dare.

In spite of a harrowing past still haunting her, Gwen Proctor is trying to move forward. Until a new assignment gives her purpose: the cold-case disappearance of a young man in Tennessee. Three years missing, no clues. Just Ruth Landry, a tortured mother in limbo. Gwen understands what it’s like to worry about your children.

Gwen’s investigation unearths new suspects...and victims. As she follows each sinister lead, the implications of the mystery grow more disturbing. Because the closer Gwen gets, the closer she is to a threat that looms back home.

In a town that’s closed its ranks against Gwen; her partner, Sam; and her kids, there’s no bolder enemy than the Belldene family - paramilitary, criminal, powerful, and vengeful. As personal vendettas collide with Gwen’s investigation, she’s prepared to fight both battles. But is she prepared for the toll it could take on everyone she loves?

My Audible review:

Bitter Falls
Stillhouse Lake #4
Rachel Caine

This series has everything that a serious thriller fan needs, heart-stopping action and diabolical twists and turns that will have readers checking their blood pressure and trying to slow their pounding pulse. In book 4, Bitter Falls the audience will see continued growth and healing in the characters while the author produces yet another fiendish case for our heroes to solve. She spares her audience no relief from fiendish cruel villains and innocent preyed upon victims. There are hellish backdrops and ghoulish scenes that put her characters in constant peril pitting them against evil at every turn. This will appeal to fans of dark thrillers and strong females and characters that NEVER give up.

Narration:
The combo of narrators expertly bring this dark dark story to life continuing to wow their listeners with emotion and clean clear intonations and make the audio version the best way to enjoy this novel.

Gwen Proctor, her two teens Connor and Atlanta (Lannie) and her partner Sam Cade can’t seem to escape the notoriety of Gwen being the ex-wife of a serial killer and Sam being the brother of his last victim. Their home in Stillhouse Lake TN seems more trap than sanctuary, there’s always someone defiling it with graffiti, someone always telling them they’re not wanted. The kids are having trouble in school and Sam has to travel farther out to find work, it’s only Gwen, now working as a private detective for a firm in Knoxville that has found satisfying work. Maybe its time to leave Stillouse Lake but that’s a huge decision and even though its against Gwen’s instincts to run she knows it’s time to get out of Dodge if only for a little while. So they set out enforce on a road trip accompanying Gwen to Knoxville to investigate a three-year-old cold case of a missing college student. Gwen uncovers disturbing things connected to this disappearance and unfortunately when they return home to Stillhouse Lake trouble isn’t far behind, 1- Vera the teen trouble magnet from their last case, has shown up on their doorstep and 2- Gwen’s current case has not only followed them home but put her family in danger. Putting Gwen in warrior woman mode looking for help anywhere she can find it, even with the family who has been trying to run them out of town.
