#AudibleReview Heartbreak Bay by Rachel Caine Stillhouse Lake #5

Today's blog post is bittersweet. Most of you know that Rachel lost her battle with cancer in late November of 2020 just two weeks before my daughter died. Heartbreak Bay was published posthumously. This will definitely be a series I revisit from time to time.
I hope you enjoy the review.

They’re hunting a killer so silent, so invisible, that his unspeakable crimes are the only proof he exists.

A car submerged in a remote pond. The bodies of two girls strapped into their seats. The mystery of their mother, vanished without a trace, leads Gwen Proctor and Kezia Claremont into dangerous territory.

On the surface, Gwen’s life is good - two children approaching adulthood, a committed partner, and a harrowing past dead and gone. But that past is attracting the attention of someone invisible...and unstoppable. Trouble’s just beginning. So is the body count in this backwoods Tennessee town.

As threats mount and Gwen’s hunted by an enemy who pulls all the strings, Kezia has her back. But working to solve these vicious and unreasonable crimes will expose them both to a killer they can’t for the life of them see coming.

My #Audible Review:

Heartbreak Bay
Rachel Caine

Heartbreak Bay #5 in the Stillhouse Lake series by Rachel Caine is an end of an era, published posthumously after Rachel’s tragic death in late 2020 from cancer. It’s hard to believe that fans will have to say goodbye not only to this amazing voice in literature but also to the characters that fans have come to love.

Gwen, Sam and their kids Lanny and Connor are settling in nicely to their new lives in Knoxville. Sam is teaching flying lessons Gwen is keeping busy with her PI work and the kids are finding new friends in school. Little did they know their world was about to fall apart. First Gwen’s best friend Norton TN detective Kezia Claremont finds the bodies of two baby girls still in their car seats submerged in a car and asks Gwen to help investigate. Then the family is once again made a target of vandals and harassment when their notorious past is made public, putting Gwen and Sam on the offensive to find out who is behind this latest attack. What they find out is the stuff of nightmares.

With her usual flare for the macabre Rachel takes fans on their last hellish journey with this one of a kind family who’ve been through so much. Her portrayals of each of her characters is spot on but it’s her genuine depictions and the continued growth of the family Lannie the rebellious teen and Conner the quiet one, Gwen the mother protector and Sam the unlikely hero dad who will once again make the most impact with the audience, however, Kezia comes in a strong second in this novel. The convoluted storyline is quite the rollercoaster ride where connecting the plot dots will give readers nightmares when they get up close and personal with Rachel’s off the charts latest and last fiendish evil doer. Perfect for lovers of dark disturbing thrillers and strong female protagonists, series should be read in order.

Narration:
As in all of this series the narration by Emily Sutton-Smith, Dan John-Miller & Tovah Ott brings this dark disturbing story to life.
