But now, Catherine is ready to spread her wings, move from home, and begin a new career. And Ruth Sterling will do anything to prevent that from happening.
Ruth Sterling thinks she knows her daughter. Catherine would never rebel, would never question anything about her mother's past or background. But when Ruth's desperate quest to keep her daughter by her side begins to reveal cracks in Ruth's carefully-constructed world, both mother and daughter begin a dance of deception.
My Macmillan Audio review:
Gone Tonight
Sara Pekkanen
Gone Tonight was one of the best and one of the strangest
thrillers I’ve experienced this year so far, a mother daughter drama that
launches into a rollercoaster ride of lies, mysteries and a secret of Pandora’s
Box porportion. Told in three parts and two timelines, the present and Ruth’s
past the novel starts out at a steady pace but speeds up exponentially as Sara
expertly unfolds her bizarre story drip feeding facts until she leads her
readers to one heck of an unexpected ending. Ruth and Catherine share the
starring role in this unpredictable tale. Ruth is a hard read and an enigma and
it will be a long time until readers/listeners will learn her entire twisted
tale while Catherine is more of an open book and readers will most likely
change their minds about these women often during the story. Fans of cat and
mouse, psychological thrillers, strong women protagonists and authors like JT
Ellison and Hank Phillipi Ryan and this exceptional author will find this novel
impossible to put down.
Narration:
Kate Mara does a bang up job of narrating both mother and daughter and all the
other players in the novel.
It’s always been mother and daughter Ruth and Catherine
Sterling against the world then as Catherine is just about to start her new
life Ruth starts showing signs of dementia and Catherine decides she wants to
stay and take care of her mother. But when Catherine stars looking into her
mother’s illness it becomes clear that the past Ruth had carefully painted is
full of holes and Ruth is keeping secrets leaving Catherine wondering who her
mother really is. Ruth’s attempts to keep Catherine in the dark about her past
is beginning to unravel and she’ll do anything to keep her secrets buried deep.
