Overview:

"Narrator Susan Ericksen's performance vibrates with energy as she portrays old and new characters in this series."—AudioFile on Desperation in Death, an Earphones Award winner.

A retired colleague falls victim to a staged suicide in Payback in Death, the next police thriller from the #1 New York Times bestselling author J.D. Robb.

Lt. Eve Dallas is just home from a long overdue vacation when she responds to a call of an unattended death. The victim is Martin Greenleaf, retired Internal Affairs Captain. At first glance, the scene appears to be suicide, but the closer Eve examines the body, the more suspicious she becomes.

An unlocked open window, a loving wife and family, a too-perfect suicide note—Eve's gut says it's a homicide. After all, Greenleaf put a lot of dirty cops away during his forty-seven years in Internal Affairs. It could very well be payback—and she will not rest until the case is closed.

My Review:

Payback in Death
Eve Dallas #57
J.D. Robb

Wow, Payback in Death, #57 in this long running series and it’s still chilling, thrilling and unputdownable, full of intrigue, amazing characters and some really cool toys from the not-too-distant (2061) future. Eve’s investigative skills will be challenged quite a bit in this fast-paced page turner as she hits one dead end after another following her instincts, knowing she’s missing something that she and her team just can’t put their heads around. The case is a conundrum a top notched futuristic police procedural that readers/listeners probably won’t figure out until JD gives us that ah-ha moment, the narrative is her usual in your face dialogue and the backdrops are as usual out of this world.  In between the death and sadness, Robb gives her audience those golden moments of respite, catching up on Peabody and McNabb’s home building, Eve and Roarke’s private moments and Eve’s relationship to her team and those she relies on for both personal and cop work support. At this point in the series, it’s not necessary for long time fans to read in order but for those living under rocks who have never read a book in the series, this Eve is very different from the Eve in early series books and they will have missed out on all the other main character developments. Fans of this amazing storyteller can’t go wrong picking up this one sitting Eve Dallas adventure.

Narration:
Like narrators of long running series Susan Ericksen, is The In Death series and I personally couldn’t think of anyone better to play these endearing characters. She makes the perfect Eve and she rocks Peabody plus she’s got the knack of putting the right emotion at the right spot giving listeners an edge over readers and making the audio version the best way to experience this novel.

Eve Dallas and Roarke have just returned from a well-deserved vacation but before she’s even scheduled to return to her work as a murder cop for the NYPSD she’s called to what appears to be the suicide of a retired internal affairs cop. The suicide note says he can’t take the guilt anymore but when Eve takes a closer look she knows this was murder. Proving who did it might not be as easy as he made a lot of enemies putting away dirty cops for decades but Eve’s as always up to the challenge because it’s her duty and her calling to speak for the dead.

  2. Susan Eriksen is Eve and all the characters as far as I am concerned. I dropped out around the 30 or 40 mark but really enjoyed the series. This sounds up to usual excellent standard.

  3. I am slowly working my way through this series so I probably won't get to this one for a while but it is good to know that the series is still going strong.
