 INTERVIEW WITH C HOPE CLARK
RICH TALK

Hi C Hope. Welcome to The Reading Frenzy.
Tell my readers about Rich Talk.
I’m a mystery author, but I’m a dialogue fanatic. I don’t care how good the story line, if the dialogue doesn’t resonate, defining each character with a deft hand without the obviousness of a cartoon, I don’t care what the plot is. So when I was graciously invited to submit to Killer Noir, dialogue came to mind. That’s where I wanted my twist. It’s a very short story, less than 3,000 words so I cannot go into great depth, but I can say that the character-speak matters for each and every one of the players, and the setting is amongst the rich and famous. If I say anymore, I’ll give it away, and goodness knows a mystery author never wants the reader to guess what’s going down until that magic twist at the end.

Is the Killer Nashville anthology the only place fans will find it?
Absolutely. It was written specifically for the Killer Nashville anthology. I am a Killer Nashville fan and felt honored when Rich Talk was chosen. Just thrilled. I’m more of a long fiction writer, but this anthology was too intriguing to pass up.

So how did a cotton famer’s granddaughter and an Agricultural graduate yourself go from farming to novelist?
By bringing crime to the country and marrying the two. My first series, The Carolina Slade Mysteries, involves a federal employee that specializes in agricultural crime. Wherever there is profit to be made, to include the agricultural arena, there is crime. So I took my background, my love for the outdoors, and founded a series where a hog farmer offers a deadly bribe, a tomato farmer is blown up on a shrimp boat because of slavery and drugs, and a governor fights against the stigma that his family grows peanuts that carry a carcinogenic mold and may have killed one of his own kin. Throw in drugs, murder, abductions, bribery, fraud, jurisdictional rivalries, and gothic Southern family drama and suddenly agricultural crime takes on a serious, three-dimensional, wild and crazy ride.
I also married a federal agent. We met on a bribery investigation, where a hog farmer offered me a bribe. I performed internal investigations until they turned criminal at which time I called in the badges and guns. He happened to be one of the ones called in. He’s my technical expert for my mysteries. Trust me, between the two of us there is no end to crime in the country. Crime that no urban dweller could comprehend.

C Hope your hubby is a 30 year law enforcement veteran.
Do you constantly pick his brain for details in your thrillers?
Absolutely! He’s a good barometer for me, as well as a technical advisor when I need to get the firearms correct, or judge how a bullet would impact a body. When to Mirandize and how to take someone to the ground. His dream is for my stories to become a cable television series, and he serve as the technical consultant. I come up with the stories, but he lets me know when they are too far off base. Of course he tells me he’d never let his cooperating individuals on cases behave as radically as Carolina Slade, and then I have to remind him that she’s the protagonist, not her sidekick federal agent.  It’s fun. I travel a lot to conferences, workshops and signings, all across the country, and he’s my best cheerleader. Put the two of us in a car together for hours, and the stories spin out of control! I’ll definitely outlive all the stories I could possibly tell.

How do Lowcountry detectives differ from Yanks?
Calm, patience, and manners. You can get a lot more out of someone with Southern charm and dole out a great deal of justice via expertly utilized passive aggression. There’s a snap and savvy to the clue connecting and dialogue. Justice is delivered though. It’s not strong-armed and loud, but it’s sweet, smart and to the point . . . with a lot of heart, pride and loyalty in the mix. And don’t forget Southern family angst, an aspect of every Southern story, regardless the genre.

C Hope thanks for the visit. Can fans find your events listed on your website?
