Overview:

Following the success of If You Only Knew and On Second Thought comes the highly anticipated new novel by New York Times best-selling author Higgins - a funny and bittersweet story of a woman who returns to her hometown after a decade's absence hoping to resuscitate her relationship with her family, only to discover that her homecoming is not as welcome as she had imagined.

It's been over a decade since Nora left her hometown of Scupper Island, Maine, and very seldom looked back. She's carved out a successful life in Boston, where no one knows her as the awkward girl with the delinquent sister and the dad who left, but a not-as-dramatic-as-it-sounds brush with death has her taking stock of her life. Inspired to reconnect with her prickly mother and snarky teenage niece, Nora returns home for the summer, where she's forced to face the people she's spent the last ten years trying to avoid and where some revelations about her family could either heal her or send her scrambling back to Boston on the next ferry.

My Review:

Now That You Mention It
Kristan Higgins

STORY 5
Higgins’ latest is a bittersweet, heartbreaker about a woman’s much needed new start. The first person narrative gives the audience a detailed account of Nora’s feelings, vulnerabilities and most importantly her courage. The eastern shore backdrop is beautiful and the Maine costal island community depicts both the upside (hardscrabble residents with a fantastic sense of community) and downside (busybodies galore) of small town living. Her characters are an incredibly authentic, complex, misunderstood bunch who just like the rest of us put one foot in front of the other and keep on keeping on. But it’s her unsinkable Nora that shines the brightest in this tale, her tenacity, her ethics and her humility are rare finds in humanity and refreshing to the reading/listening audience. This is a bit darker than a usual Higgins offering but it’s rich with this author’s iconic snark and reality of the good bad and ugly variety but it’s also got a lot of heart and good old-fashioned optimism.

NARRATION 5
Xe Sands does a fabulous job of narrating and her male voices are superb plus she delivers that something extra-added dose of emotion that readers just don’t experience. But it’s her portrayal of Nora, her first person chronicle of the life of this vulnerable yet strong as nails, modest and moral woman that’s the real stand out and will rank this as a must-read, best-seller and will have the listener saving it for just the right time to revisit this story.

SUMMARY:
After being hit by a Bean Town Bug Van
You’d think being hit by a van and seeing your life flash before your eyes would be the worst thing that could happen and that’s exactly what Dr. Nora Stuart MD thought too, until she wakes up in the ER and watches her ER doc boyfriend flirt with a coworker as they’re tending to her injuries. So after breaking up with said boyfriend she goes home to Scupper Island Maine to recuperate at her mom’s house which is a really big deal because Nora hasn’t stepped foot on the island since she was eighteen. She just hopes going back to where all her awful childhood memories are isn’t a huge mistake.
When she arrives she finds her mom just as distant as ever, and yay she gets to room with her brooding, troubled fifteen-year-old niece. If that’s not enough she also has to deal with her teenaged nemesis, Luke who still believes she stole a prestigious scholarship from him plus all the former mean kids who once upon a time made her life a living hell. But there are also bright spots to being back home, she gets to practice medicine at the local clinic, not all the mean kids stayed mean and there’s also handsome, sexy, Sully, her nemesis’ twin who causes sparks in her libido.
