Caro's Message:
Caro Carson
Happy Ho-Ho-Ho-Holidays to everyone! It is December 10th,
and I must confess that the stockings are not hung by the chimney with
care…yet. I need a little Christmas, right this very minute, don’t I?
Actually, I don’t. Or rather, I do need a little Christmas,
but this is just one of those years where things happen a little more slowly.
They’ll happen, though. There will be stockings for Santa to fill on December
24th. There always are. In fact, I usually go a little overboard,
even decorating the bathrooms with a collection of snowflakes. I change out the
dishes to Christmas dishes, the dishtowels and even the potholders get
holiday-ized. But so far this year, rather than store all my plates and cereal bowls
and then pull out—and wash—the Christmas set, I’ve only swapped out the coffee
mugs. The December-only batch of coffee mugs are making me smile every day. I
might not get to the rest of the dishes this year. The mugs might be good
enough. I’m happy, and I’m not stressing myself out to do more by a certain
date. I’m old enough and experienced enough to know that matters.
BUT…
I have that little voice in my head that’s trying to make me
feel guilty. The one that says are you being wise, or are you being lazy?
Fortunately, I saw one of the many cartoons that imagine the
day after the Three Wise Men leave Mary and her new baby. The Three Wise Women
arrive. They bring casseroles and diapers and tell Mary to take a nap. Wise,
indeed.
So, I imagine the wise women in my life—my mother and
godmother, my stepmother and mother-in-law, my grandmothers—listening to me
apologize that, so far, I only have Christmas mugs out this year instead of a
full set of kitchenware. To a woman, I can imagine every single one shrugging.
“Maybe you’ll get the dishes out, maybe you won’t. Don’t worry about it. The
mugs are cute.”
I believe them. Life just moves at different speeds during
different years. Maybe I’ll catch the decorating fever and go all out before
December 24th, or maybe we’ll have stockings hanging by the chimney
and sip coffee from cute Christmas mugs. Either way, it will be a joyful
Christmas. I’m resolved to head into the New Year with the conviction that I’m
not lazy; I’m wise. So are you! The Three Wise Women say so.
May we all enjoy the happiest of new years!
