Teri's Christmas message:
Hello, all and Merry Christmas! My holiday release this year
from Special Edition includes something I’ve wanted to write about for a very
long time—the Nutcracker ballet.
I grew up in Houston, and when I was a little girl, my
cousin Jerry Schwender and his wife, Leslie Peck were principal dancers with
the Houston Ballet. One of our family traditions (my favorite!) was always to
go see one of their performances. On Christmas Eve, my dancer cousins would
turn up late to the family festivities because they’d have to wait until after
the final evening show. And they’d always bring loads of their ballet friends
who wouldn’t have time to make it home for Christmas due to their performance
schedule.
I always loved it when the ballerinas floated into the party,
with their straight backs and beautifully turned out feet. I could hardly
believe they were real people after I’d just seen them dancing and spinning
across the stage while snowflakes fell from the rafters. I fell in love with
ballet during those years, and I love it still. To me, it was pure magic, a
part of the holidays, just like Santa and Christmas lights and hot chocolate
with marshmallows. Dance ends up sneaking its way into many of my books and I
still make a habit of going to see the Nutcracker every year during the
Christmas holidays. This year, I’ll be going to see the Moscow Ballet’s Great
Russian Nutcracker on December 27.
The version of the Nutcracker in A Daddy by Christmas is a children’s Christmas Eve performance,
starring adorable toddlers in pink tights and tutus. I hope readers and enjoy
it and I’m thankful to be able to bring a tiny part of my family Christmas to
life on the page!
