Overview:
In the fall of 1939, Grace Baker’s three brothers, sharp and proud in their uniforms, board Canadian ships headed for a faraway war. Grace stays behind, tending to the homefront and the general store that helps keep her small Nova Scotian community running. The war, everyone says, will be over before it starts. But three years later, the fighting rages on and rumors swirl about “wolf packs” of German U-Boats lurking in the deep waters along the shores of East Jeddore, a stone’s throw from Grace’s window. As the harsh realities of war come closer to home, Grace buries herself in her work at the store.
Then, one day, a handsome stranger ventures into the store. He claims to be a trapper come from away, and as Grace gets to know him, she becomes enamored by his gentle smile and thoughtful ways. But after several weeks, she discovers that Rudi, her mysterious visitor, is not the lonely outsider he appears to be. He is someone else entirely - someone not to be trusted. When a shocking truth about her family forces Grace to question everything she has so strongly believed, she realizes that she and Rudi have more in common than she had thought. And if Grace is to have a chance at love, she must not only choose a side, but take a stand.
Come from Away is a mesmerizing story of love, shifting allegiances, and second chances, set against the tumultuous years of the Second World War.

The audio edition of Come From Away is a delight because of
the flawless emotion filled performance by Michelle Ferguson. It’s perfectly
articulated, she’s got the male and female voices down pat and her German
accent while reciting Rudy’s role is amazing. Having read and reviewed the
print copy I love both but I have to admit that listening to it gave it just a
little bit more.

ReplyDeletewoo hoo, I hope you get to listen to Tides of Honour too it tells Danny and Audrey's stories
DeleteTotally agree with you on this one Debbie. I loved the Canadian history. I saw recently a u-boat came into Napier harbour here in NZ during war and saw people dancing, but... they went down again and left! Wasn't known they visited until after the war.
ReplyDeleteI know I've also heard about them after the fact and yes I love how she tells a story, At The Mountain's Edge is near the top of my TBR pile
DeleteI thought Michelle Ferguson did a great job with all the voices in this one, too. I think its one of my favorites of her stories with Promises to Keep.
ReplyDeleteyeah I loved this too Sophia Rose but my fave is Tides of Honour so far. Have you read her latest?
DeleteI held out for the audio and agree, this was wonderful. I loved the narration!
