Vacation goals…

I have them. Real life is not cooperating.

I don’t require poolside margaritas under a fancy cabana to have a good time. All I wanted was ten ghost-free days to enjoy sightseeing New Orleans with my boyfriend, to admire art galleries, listen to live music, and eat as many beignets as I can before my pants stop buttoning.

I might as well have asked Santa for a unicorn.

Within thirty-six hours of setting foot in the Big Easy, an ancient ghost warns me of a murderous spirit lurking in the city, a strip-mall psychic tells me I look pregnant (I blame the beignets) and, oh, yeah, a dead body shows up on the set of my boyfriend’s TV show and he lands himself at the top of the suspect list.

If this karma, I must have been an ax murderer in a previous life.

Sophia's Review:

Scarlett is going on vacation to the Big Easy where her boyfriend, Lucas, is working the security for a home improvement show set.  This is a ghost-free trip and she plans to enjoy it.  But, of course, the universe laughs at her 'vacation rules' and delivers her a murder in which Lucas is suspect number one and the house for the show is haunted by a dangerous ghost.  Not all the beignets in New Orleans are enough for this stressful trip.

When Good Ghosts Get the Blues is book three in the Beechwood Harbor Ghost Mystery series and works best when gotten in order since the main characters are recurring and there are references to past events.  Though, yes, in a pinch, one could pick it up and enjoy it to an extent without the others.  Also, just a reminder, that this series is a spinoff of the Beechwood Harbor Magic Series.

I enjoy light paranormal cozy mysteries for a change up and the floral shop owning Scarlett and her ghost besties are great entertainment.  Scarlett is a well-adjusted person except with the idea of keeping a boyfriend like Lucas around since she comes with ghostly baggage.  She's waiting for the moment that too much is too much especially with the other supernatural secrets she's keeping from him, but Lucas keeps surprising her and plans to stick around.  Most of this book, things are very tense because someone is framing Lucas for murder and the police seem content to accept him as a prime suspect.  Lucas wants to ignore the problem while Scarlett thinks dealing with it head on is best.

The New Orleans' setting was fun and I loved being along on Scarlett and Lucas' sight-seeing dates and particularly for those calorie-laced meals.

The murder mystery was front and center though there wasn't much actual investigating on Scarlet's part until later.  In the latter half, she did go into sleuth-mode with some surprising help and nab the culprit.  I figured out the who quickly enough, but had no idea about the why until the reveal since there was a detail I didn't have that made sense of it all.  Right at the end, Scarlett learns something big about her ghost abilities that will be a series game changer.  I look forward to seeing where that takes things.

Amanda Ronconi was superb as usual in her narration role.  I like her portrayal of all the regular characters and the New Orleans characters had a believable regional accent for southern Louisiana.  I get a real kick out of her Flapjack the ghost cat voice- so droll.  I'm glad she's doing this series.

All in all, it was fun times as usual and I enjoyed this latest series installment.  I can heartily recommend this one to those looking for light paranormal cozy mysteries to enjoy.

My thanks to Tantor Audio for the opportunity to listen to this book in exchange for an honest review.

Author Bio:
From a young age, Danielle Garrett was obsessed with fantastic places and the stories set in them. As a lifelong bookworm, she’s gone on hundreds of adventures through the eyes of wizards, princesses, elves, and some rather wonderful everyday people as well.
Danielle now lives in Oregon and while she travels as often as possible, she wouldn’t call anywhere else home. She shares her life with her husband and their house full of animals, and when not writing, spends her time being a house servant for three extremely spoiled cats.

    1. There seriously are. I've tried a few and stuck with three or four series. I don't even try all the series by an author b/c even that would be too many. :)
