GoodReads Blurb:
Marshal Will Fain and Deputy Marshal Isum Wood track an escaped murderer who has escaped from the Santa Angela jail with the help of his brothers. They defend the Fain Ranch against a vengeful posse from Fort Griffin intent on murdering Will and Isum, uncover a four-state counterfeiting operation headquartered in San Antonio and track down one of Texas' most famous bank robbers, Jim Bob Winslow. Will and Isum refuse to recognize the border between Texas and Mexico, and go into Mexico to capture four of the toughest and most murderous outlaws ever known in Texas. Marshal Fain testifies many times in the counterfeiting trial and attends the hanging of Winslow and his gang. During this action, Will's wife, Virginia, gives birth to twin boys, Jesse and Joshua, and Will gains new respect and love for her.

Sophia Rose's Review:

Continuing with the series is a given for me as I enjoy the larger than life Marshal Fain, the surrounding cast, the action, and western setting with interesting historical details.  My love for western and frontier fiction is satisfied once again with this latest release in the audio edition.

Will Fain, US Marshal book three could standalone in a pinch, but it does have ongoing character stories and even a little carry over from the previous books.

Will has put the man who shot the San Angelo town sheriff in jail and now is dealing with the threat of the man's brothers come to get him out and exact their revenge.  Virginia is close to giving birth to their baby.  He must eventually head into San Antonio with the Spanish treasure.  And, there are no shortage of lawless men in the region that he must bring to justice.

I loved seeing Will and Isum, his deputy, in action once again as they deliver that gold and stumble into a counterfeiting scheme and then an armed bank robbing gang.  It was also sweet when he was at home on the ranch with Virginia and the kids.   The author writes a strong white hat hero type, but pairs him with a woman who is just as strong and capable.  Will not only respects Virginia, but he seeks her opinion and lets her call the shots as often as he does.

The author peppers these stories with lots of real life historical personages from the times, but also a montage of his own diverse and colorful cast of people from all races and walks of life.  It gives depth to the shoot 'em up side of the plot.  The big hunt at the end was intense and just the thing to finish off the story.

Narrator AT Chandler is the voice of the series and at this point, I doubt I could even read the print editions without hearing him voice the characters in my mind.  I think he does a fabulous job of bringing it all to life and especially Will.

All in all, this latest installment was even stronger than the last.  There is a little humor and even a sad part here and there to go with the Old West backdrop and storyline.  I am eager for the next adventure with Will and the gang.  Those who enjoy western fiction need to saddle this bronc and give it a listen-read.

My thanks to Tantor Audio for the opportunity to listen to this book in exchange for an honest review.

  1. Sophia Rose your love affair with historical Westerns amaze me and have given me a new appreciation for the genre. You have brought back names like Louis L'Amour and others often left behind by new names in writing. Thank you for this gift! xo

    1. It really is a love affair, Debbie. If it weren't for the need to have modern plumbing and not have to hunt down my own food, I'd jump in a time machine. :)

  2. That sounds fun. I don't read a lot of this genre but chasing bad guys down is always fun to read about.

    1. They are a great partnership as a couple. I love how all the elements work well together in this one. Hope you get the chance to try a historical western someday. Oh, and by the way, Louis L'Amour wrote one about Spanish California and is set in Southern Cal where you live. It's called The Californios. :)
