Overview:
Three skilled aviators determined to help win the war. Three brave women who know their place is not at home.

At the height of World War II, the British Air Transport Auxiliary need help. A group of young women volunteer for action, but the perils of their new job don't end on the tarmac. Things are tough in the air, but on the ground their abilities as pilots are constantly questioned.

There is friction from the start between the new recruits. Spirited American Lizzie turns heads with her audacity, but few can deny her flying skills. She couldn't be more different from shy, petite Ruby, who is far from diminutive in the sky. It falls to pragmatic pilot May to bring the women together and create a formidable team capable of bringing the aircraft home.

As these very different women fight to prove themselves up to the task at hand, they are faced with challenges and tragedies at every turn. They must fight for equal pay and respect while handling aircraft that are dangerously ill-equipped; meanwhile, lives continue to be lost in the tumult of war.

Determined to assist the war effort doing what they love, can May, Lizzie and Ruby put aside their differences to overcome adversity, and will they find love in the skies?

My Review:

The Spitfire Girls
Soraya Lane
Narrated by Sarah Zimmerman Brilliance Audio

Lane’s The Spitfire Girls is loosely based on the British ATA and the US WASPS and is one heck of a historical fictional tale. The three main women protagonists are all spitfires, all well developed and all fantastic and their male counterparts are equally good. The backdrops are realistic the time period is genuinely represented and the other women costars are all an imperative part of the story. Soraya’s storytelling is excellent and readers/listeners will find themselves laughing one minute and wiping their eyes the next. If you’re a fan of WWII fiction, women’s fiction or strong women protagonists this novel is for you.
Sarah Zimmerman did a really good job of narrating catching all the emotions perfectly. Her depiction of Lizzie was spot on and all her other women were great too. The men she did okay with.
Texas born and bread Lizzie Dunlop always wanted to her WWI pilot hero father proud of her so she followed in his every footstep even following him into the air. When in 1941 she had a brilliant idea about women pilots helping out the Army Air Force she wrote a letter to first lady Eleanor Roosevelt which to her astonishment didn’t fall on deaf ears and just like that she finds herself across the pond training with the brave women of the British Air Transport Auxiliary and bringing it back home when she’s completed the training.
May Jones suffered a terrible war loss but instead of crying in her pillow she was proud to be the leader of the brave women pilots of the ATA who sacrificed so much for the war themselves. Then a loud mouth Texan showed up and wanted to show off and show everyone else up making May want to shoot her out of the sky herself.
Ruby Sanders loved flying and before the war she and her fiancĂ© flew together now he’s in the RAF and she’s determined to join the ATA but her future mother-in-law is forbidding it and telling Ruby her husband-to-be will forbid it too. Ruby only knows that if the man she loves tries to stop her from this venture he’s not the man she thought he was.

  1. Love how the audio sounds. I read and reviewed this one back from NG I think. I liked it and was eye opening. Just was on FB this morning and Soraya Lane was sharing how hard it is to write with kids and hubby at home now we are all in lockdown. I feel for all those who are in close quarters so much at the moment.

    1. I think you're the reason I got this Kathryn :)
Let's just say if they find a body in my yard when this is over it may be my husband. This is so hard and there's only two of us I can't imagine being here with young children, but I was younger when my kids were young so maybe. Anyway I can't wait to be on the other side of this. You stay safe
