Overview:

#1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts begins a new trilogy of adventure, romance, and magick in The Awakening.

In the realm of Talamh, a teenage warrior named Keegan emerges from a lake holding a sword—representing both power and the terrifying responsibility to protect the Fey. In another realm known as Philadelphia, a young woman has just discovered she possesses a treasure of her own…

When Breen Kelly was a girl, her father would tell her stories of magical places. Now she’s an anxious twentysomething mired in student debt and working a job she hates. But one day she stumbles upon a shocking discovery: her mother has been hiding an investment account in her name. It has been funded by her long-lost father—and it’s worth nearly four million dollars.

This newfound fortune would be life-changing for anyone. But little does Breen know that when she uses some of the money to journey to Ireland, it will unlock mysteries she couldn’t have imagined. Here, she will begin to understand why she kept seeing that silver-haired, elusive man, why she imagined his voice in her head saying Come home, Breen Siobhan. It’s time you came home. Why she dreamed of dragons. And where her true destiny lies—through a portal in Galway that takes her to a land of faeries and mermaids, to a man named Keegan, and to the courage in her own heart that will guide her through a powerful, dangerous destiny…

My Macmillan Audio Review:

The Awakening
The Dragon Heart Legacy #1
Nora Roberts

Nora Roberts first in her new fantasy trilogy is fantastic and readers will absolutely adore Nora’s newest heroine Breen and her transformation from ordinary human to powerful fae witch. The story takes place in both the human realm, (Ireland and Philadelphia) and Talamh (realm of the fae) and she makes the backdrops in both places come to life for readers but it’s definitely Talamh that will make eyes pop with dragons, witches and all types of magical beings. Speaking of the beings, Nora’s secondary characters are incredible too, especially Keegan but Breens grandmother, Marg, comes in at a very close second. Then there’s Breen’s human BFF Marco, he’s a charmer and one of a few people in Philadelphia that have Breen’s back and readers will really love these fabulous men. There is a slow burning romance between Breen and Keegan and Roberts handles this like the master storyteller she’s proven over and over to be. Nora’s last few fantasy trilogies have been unforgettable and The Dragon Heart Legacy has the start to equal her last fantasy trilogy The Chronicles of The One. Brava Nora!

Narration:
The narration by Barrie Kreinik was absolutely stunning, her true Irish lilt makes all the magical characters really come to life for her listeners and she does a bang-up job for the US characters too. Plus her vocal range really legitimizes her male and female characters. This was my first experience with this narrator and I hope I get to hear her more in the future. A good narrator can make or break a novel and this narrator gets and A+.

Breen Kelly has always been told by her mother she’s not enough, not talented enough, not brave enough, not a good enough daughter to keep her father from leaving. Now she’s all grown up and she made sure she was a good daughter to her mother and instead of following her dreams she becomes a teacher like her mother wanted. Then one day everything changed upon repeatedly seeing a silver haired man which led her to discover that her mother was hiding an inheritance which led her to Ireland the land of her father, where her life changed again when she travels through a portal leading to the realm of Talamh, where magiks rule, and her true birthright that’s she’s a daughter of the fae, that her father died protecting her and that she has a destiny. That destiny might also include Keegan the ruler of Talamh. But is she strong enough to face her destiny and leave the human realm for Talamh? She’ll have to decide and fast because evil is coming and it just may lead to the destruction of both realms.
