Overview:

Forced into retirement, Evan Smoak gets an urgent request for help from someone he didn't even suspect existed—in Prodigal Son, the next New York Times bestselling Orphan X book from Gregg Hurwitz.

As a boy, Evan Smoak was pulled out of a foster home and trained in an off-the-books operation known as the Orphan Program. He was a government assassin, perhaps the best, known to a few insiders as Orphan X. He eventually broke with the Program and adopted a new name—The Nowhere Man—and a new mission, helping the most desperate in their times of trouble. But the highest power in the country has made him a tempting offer—in exchange for an unofficial pardon, he must stop his clandestine activities as The Nowhere Man. Now Evan has to do the one thing he’s least equipped to do—live a normal life.

But then he gets a call for help from the one person he never expected. A woman claiming to have given him up for adoption, a woman he never knew—his mother. Her unlikely request: help Andrew Duran—a man whose life has gone off the rails, who was in the wrong place at the wrong time, bringing him to the deadly attention of very powerful figures. Now a brutal brother & sister assassination team are after him and with no one to turn to, and no safe place to hide, Evan is Duran’s only option. But when the hidden cabal catches on to what Evan is doing, everything he’s fought for is on the line—including his own life.

My Macmillan Audio Review:

Prodigal Son
Orphan X #6
Gregg Hurwitz

Prodigal Son #6 in Hurwitz’s Orphan X series is a non-stop at the speed of sound chiller that will leave the audience with their hearts in their throats after having their socks blown off!

Evan Smoak use to kill people for the government, a top, maybe the best to come out of the Orphan Program and one of the few to leave the program alive and chose to covertly help people who have nowhere else to turn as the Nowhere Man. But that was before Madam President gave him a choice, retire or be removed. Just as Evan is accepting normal life he receives a call from someone he never thought he’d ever come in contact with, a woman claiming to be his mother asking for help for, Andrew Duran, a man that turns out Evan lived with in the orphan group home as a kid. The people who want to kill Andrew have deadlier weapons than even Evan has and just like that he’s pulled back into the life of secrets, spies and things the blow up.

#6 in Hurwitz’s bestselling Orphan X series is a roller-coaster on steroids edge of your seat thriller that should come with a warning for weak hearts. In this explosive (literally) novel Gregg does a bang up (literally) job of putting enough backstory in that even new fans to the series get a feel for Evan and all the returning characters and in this particular installment readers/listeners are gifted with a seldom naked look at what makes Evan tick even as Evan’s trying to convince the audience that he’s more automaton than human. Gregg’s in your face narrative brings his eclectic characters, returning and new to brilliant vivid life and will allow the audience to feel the percussive impact of every explosion and feel every tear of the flesh.
Fans of Jack Reacher, The Gray Man or similar series will not be able to put this book down.

Narration: This was my first experience with Scott Brick, his impressive impeccable performance brings every character and scene to life for the audience and is the way to go to amplify the enjoyment of this novel.

Personal note: This is my first experience with Gregg Hurwitz and the Orphan X series and he has done what very few authors have accomplished, making such an impression on me that I HAVE to go the beginning and learn all about these characters and their incredible stories.
