In 2020, a year after an out-of-this-world encounter in
Chinatown, Una Waters ventures into Yosemite National Park with General
Ashcroft, on their honeymoon. When a coded distress call pulls him unexpectedly
away on duty, Una uncovers a UFO mystery and turns to compadre Jack Howser for
help. Joined by friends from Explorers Club, their quest for answers leads to a
string of unworldly campsites, ancient caves, living pterosaurs, and a military
manhunt--all fueled by an Alien conspiracy that threatens the survival of
humanity! Una comes to realize that Fear of the Unknown may be our greatest
obstacle, and the fight to overcome it requires Transformation: a willingness
to let go of the Lies we hold dear.
Sophia Rose's Review:
After the mysterious and heart-pounding events of the book,
a year has gone by and things are about to intensify once again. Would earth survive? I couldn’t wait to find out so happily put in
my earbuds for the final leg of the series.
Beyond the World is book three in the Survivor trilogy of
sci-fi fantasies that must be read/listened to in order to make sense.
Hopi tribeswoman, investigator, and new believer in the
mystical and the unexplained on earth and beyond, Una Waters, is on her honeymoon
with General Colin Ashcroft in Yosemite National Park when the general gets
called away on a covert military situation and Una waits for him with a group
of Explorer’s Club kids and leader at their camp in Yosemite. Naturally, something odd is going on in
Yosemite and Una is drawn in right away.
She isn’t sure how long Colin will be on his secret mission so she ropes
in Jack to come. She is unnerved by the
signs and wonders starting up again.
Meanwhile, Colin’s old special operations teammate has sent him a MayDay
not long before he escapes from a nearby military imprisonment and a military
operation that is a threat to the safety of the world if they would only
believe it.
Beyond the World leaps into action and keeps up a steady
pace of mysterious finds, events, and action that lead to the answers to what
everything since the first book until now has been leading up to. Una and the others know that aliens are real
and walk among us and some are good and some not so good with the power to
change everything for earth. They know
they have to work out exactly what everything means before they are out of time
and get the help of a fun motley crew with some possessing the keys to it all. I was tickled to see the return of a
surprising character and also the help of a certain alien character.
Speaking of characters, I enjoyed the mixture of the cast
that were all working together at Yosemite even down to the kids of the
Explorer’s Club and Colin’s odd military friend (who turned out to have a reason
for his oddity).
This is one of those books that packs a lot of details in-
not necessarily descriptions of settings or people, but background information
to fill in the complexities of the world of the books. The listener really has to stick with it and
not half-way listen or stuff can get missed or get confusing. If I had a niggle, it was sometimes feeling
there was too much to process and wishing some of the explanation details could
have been left out. I enjoyed
everything leading up to the end when all was explained and I knew what was
really going on, but it was also one of those open-ended finishes that left me
with some questions and curiosity.
Kat Bohn returned as the series narrator and I’m used to her
telling the Survivor trilogy story. She
leans toward voice actor rather than narrator and infuses a great deal of
emotion and acting to her storytelling.
I wasn’t ready for the story to be over and wanted more of
this world and the people. The meshing
of mythologies, of aliens, military intrigue, and more really worked for
me. I have decided to call it a sci-fi
fantasy and recommend the trilogy to those who enjoy a melding of these genres.
