Overview:
Best friends forever until life got in the way.
Katherine Hill left her small New England hometown in pursuit of a dream. Please
welcome Emily Liebert whose talking about her debut novel You Knew Me When
Emily
please tell us a little about this novel.
You Knew Me When is about best friends who were like sisters to each other. Katherine Hill left her small New England hometown in pursuit of a dream. Now, twelve years later, she’s a high-powered cosmetics executive in Manhattan and a much glossier version of her former self, unrecognizable to her family and old friends. Laney Marten always swore she’d never get “stuck” in Manchester, VT. Instead, she wound up a young wife and a mother. When Katherine receives word of an inheritance from former neighbor Luella Hancock, she reluctantly returns home to the people and places she left behind. Hoping for a second chance, she’s met by an unforgiving Laney, her former best friend. And there’s someone else who’s moved on without her. Someone she once loved. Tethered to their shared inheritance of Luella’s sprawling Victorian mansion, Katherine and Laney are forced to address their longstanding grudges. Through this, they will come to understand that, while life took them in different directions, ultimately the bonds of friendship and sisterhood still bind them together.

Tell
us about your collaborations with Zoya nail polish and designer Meskita in
regards to You Knew Me When, how did
this come about and what does it entail?
There’s a “You Knew Me When” nail polish collection created by Zoya, with three polishes named after the three main female characters—Katherine Hill, Laney Marten, and Luella Hancock. The hues are gorgeous for Fall! There’s also a “You Knew Me When” dress collection by Meskita with three dresses named for the women. And, finally, the jewelry brand Dodo by Pomellato has spectacular 18kt gold charms, each with a special message. I had the unique opportunity to select the charms that best reflect the personalities of my novel’s characters: the butterfly with the message “I love my freedom” for high powered cosmetics executive Katherine Hill who does everything on her own and never takes no for an answer; the starfish “Handle with care” for the spirited and ever loyal Laney Marten who always says what’s on her mind whether you like it or not; and the angelfish whose message “You work miracles” echoes the relentlessly generous but also painstakingly private personality of Luella Hancock. It was my idea to do the nail polish and, with Zoya’s creative input, we honed the idea for the collection. The dress collection came about when I met Alessandra Meskita on vacation earlier this year. We clicked immediately and knew we had to work together! And the jewelry collaboration came about when my mother-in-law walked into the Dodo store on Madison Avenue in New York City and told them about me and my forthcoming novel!

Emily this is your debut as a novelist but it’s not your first foray into writing.
Tell us a little about who Emily Liebert really is and how she got to where she is today.
I started writing professionally when I was the Editor-in-Chief of The WAG—a glossy luxury lifestyle magazine covering Westchester and Fairfield Counties in NY and CT respectively. During my five year tenure, I probably wrote 100+ articles. After that, I wrote freelance for outlets such as Cottages & Gardens, Robb Report, Elite Traveler, Oprah.com, Huffington Post etc…then I edited Kerry Kennedy’s New York Times bestseller Being Catholic Now, and—finally—I wrote my first book Facebook Fairytales, which was narrative non-fiction.

I
have to ask you about your non-fiction book Facebook Fairytales.
Great title!
What is it about and what inspired it?
Thanks! It’s funny. I never intended to write non-fiction. But, one day, I started thinking that—with all of the hundreds of millions of connections on Facebook—there must be some really amazing stories evolving. I pitched the idea of a collection of 25 remarkable stories that had stemmed from a Facebook connection to my agent and she loved it. The book sold quickly and was very successful! The stories range from a couple who adopted a baby via a Facebook connection to a teenager’s life who was saved, to sisters reuniting after 40 years.

Your next novel is due
out Next year. How far into it are you and can you tell us what it’s about?
Yes! I finished writing it about two months ago and now I’m in the editing process. It’s called The Love That Lies Ahead
and is scheduled to publish in September 2014. It’s about a woman who lost her
husband eleven years ago and found out she was pregnant with their son a week
after he died. Now, over a decade later, she and her son are moving back to her
hometown for a fresh start. Unbeknownst to her, her husband’s former best
friend and his wife live there now…and that leads to lots of interesting plot
twists!
Emily
your career runs a gamut of venues in the media market from on-air to print.
Has this experience helped you in writing fiction?
Has this experience helped you in writing fiction?
Everything
helps because I base my characters and plots on people I know and work with. So
watch out! ;)
Emily
this is a precarious time to become a novelist.
What is your take on the new self-publishing frenzy?
Would you ever have considered going that path?
What is your take on the new self-publishing frenzy?
Would you ever have considered going that path?
I think
it’s fantastic that anyone can publish a book these days. Not everyone is
looking to pursue it as a career path. And, in some cases, self-published books
are met with great success and do get picked up by a traditional publishing
house. That said, it’s a very tough road, so—for my purposes—I never considered
going in that direction.
Your
bio also states you love curling up with a good book.
What was the last book you read and what did you like or dislike about it?
What was the last book you read and what did you like or dislike about it?
The last book I read was Lauren Weisberger’s Revenge Wears Prada. What I loved about it was that it surprised me—I don’t usually love sequels and I thought Lauren remained true to her original characters. It was really fun to see how far they’d come in ten years time!
According
to your bio you make appearances on
such programs as NBC’s Today Show, The Rachael Ray Show. So can you tell my
readers what Matt Lauer and Rachael Ray are really like?
Well, for Today Show,
I was interviewed by Sara Haines—who’s now at ABC News. She’s a good friend of
mine and is one of the kindest, most talented people I know. Rachael Ray was
absolutely delightful. She is an unbelievably hard worker.
Emily thank you so much for chatting with me today and letting me pick your brain.
Good luck with the new novel!
