Christine's Christmas Post

Hi everyone!  It’s so great to visit you again here on The Reading Frenzy Blog’s Ho-Ho-Ho Holiday Extravaganza featuring Harlequin authors and their holiday stories. I write for Harlequin’s Special Edition line.  At Special Edition, we’re all about family connections and the rich traditions that bind us. That’s why every year when I visit you all here, I like to share one of my own personal family traditions. This year, I want to talk about one of my most anticipated Christmas indulgences.
For me, Christmas is the one time of year when I allow myself to splurge on a pound-size box of my favorite candy in the whole, wide world—See’s.  Every year, shortly after Thanksgiving, I head for the Clackamas Town Center Mall where I visit the See’s store and indulge myself in 16 delicious ounces of mixed dark chocolates.

Oh, my!  Soooo good.  I love See’s.  I love their stores, all white with a homey black-and-white floor.   To me, See’s candy is the ultimate holiday treat.  When I lived in Oklahoma, you could only get See’s at mall stands during the holidays.  But here in Oregon, we have a whole store full of See’s year-round at our mall, complete with friendly clerks in white aprons and that famous checkerboard floor.  At See’s, you always get a free sample.  Last time I visited, I got dark chocolate raspberry cream.  Happy Holidays, indeed!
I love the See’s box, with that sweet picture of Mary See on it.  Doesn’t she just look like everyone’s perfect grandma?  Not to mention one brilliant candy maker.
I’ve been eating See’s candy since early childhood.  I was born and raised in California and See’s is a California company founded in Los Angeles in 1921.  When I was little and holiday bells were ringing, you can bet that one of my grandmas or a generous uncle would always show up with a big box of See’s to share.   I loved the mystery of choosing a chocolate from the box.  I mean, you never really knew for sure what you were getting until you bit into it.  I liked nutty chews and cream-filled the best.  Not a big fan of fruit centers.  But I was taught that once you touched it, you ate it.  So I would dutifully eat even the ones with the maraschino cherries in the center.  And hope for better luck next time the candy box came my way.
Do you have a favorite See’s candy?  Or if not See’s, what’s your favorite holiday treat?  Whatever sweet temptation makes you smile, happy Hanukkah, a richly non-commercial Festivus, a joyous Kwanzaa, a very merry Christmas and a productive and prosperous New Year to all!

    1. Kim, it's considered the home and and family line--down-to-earth characters and complex relationships--and of course, lots of romance!

  9. I had never heard of See's way back in 2003, but I was entering lots and lots of contests back then, and won a year's worth of Candy from them. I look forward to receiving treats once a month for an entire year, so I totally understand why you love them so much! Hugs, RO
