Hi everyone & Merry Christmas!

I love this time of year and although I live in Australia, where it’s hot and humid around the holidays, there’s still some traditions I wouldn’t skip. Like the tree – the same tree I’ve decorated for nearly two decades (not a real tree, as too many critters like to hibernate in a real one) And I always have a theme for my gift wrapping – this year it’s red and green style paper with velvet ribbon.  And I like to make treats – like shortbread and rum balls 

(great little recipe here https://www.womensweeklyfood.com.au/recipes/classic-rum-balls-1632 ) We eat a lot of cold food on Christmas Day – ham and salads and of course shrimp/prawns. And trifle! Copious amounts of trifle!

Oh, and I love waiting for the firetruck – you see, we live in a small sea side town, at the southern most point of the Great Barrier Reef, and every year the local volunteer fire fighting crew drive their truck through the town, with Santa Claus afloat, handing out small bags of lollies (candy) to children on Christmas Eve. It’s such a great tradition and one the whole community gets behind to support and enjoy.

I have a Christmas themed book out this year, The Soldier’s Secret Son, and I love being able to incorporate a holiday theme as there’s such a strong sense of family and community around this time of year. Of course, that’s why I love writing for Harlequin Special Edition – family and traditions are interwoven between the pages.

So, wherever you are, whatever you celebrate over the holidays – or even if you resist the festivities and treat the day like any other – stay safe and happy!

Helen Lacey grew up reading Black Beauty, Anne of Green Gables and Little House on The Prairie. These childhood classics inspired her to write her first book when she was seven years old, a story about a girl and her horse.
